She ran to the window and leaped out, landing smoothly on the ground. She knelt for a second before rising, her eyes scanning the surroundings. The torchlight made long, dancing shadows that made things look scary. She listened carefully; the night air smelled strongly of smoke and something else… something metallic and sharp, like blood. Her eyes narrowed, focusing on a dark passage where the shadows seemed to move.
Her eyes widened upon realizing that the scream came from the house to her left, a few meters away. So she ran towards the brown wooden house and jumped off to the ground. She was standing on the first roof of the house, which was the roof of their balcony, and broke in; she broke the glass. The demon paused for a moment, but kept growling when it heard the glass shattering.
"This place is actually dangerous for everyone who lives here," I told Claudia, and she glanced at me.
"I wouldn't deny that," she replied softly.
"Because we're in a demon apocalypse, and the demons want to invade this place," she stated firmly, expressing her grief.
Neima slowly leaned out the window, her arrow aimed at the demon. As she released the arrow, the demon was struck and slowly vanished in a vertical plume of fire.
Another demon, inside the house, lunged at her. Neima quickly grabbed an arrow from behind her and fired. The demon was hit, and it too, slowly disappeared. She continued to strike down each demon, one by one, until they were all gone. Then, she grabbed the woman in the duster dress and ran towards the door.
They quickly descended the stairs, escaping the room. Neima held the woman's hand tightly, her eyes scanning for a hiding place, somewhere impossible for the demons to smell her out.
"We have nothing to hide here," the woman said, her voice filled with despair. "Even if I hide, they can still smell me." She glanced around, her eyes darting to every dark corner of her house.
Neima exhaled heavily, the tension in her shoulders was obvious. Then, a growl erupted from behind her. She spun around, her hand instantly reaching for an arrow. She fired, the arrow finding its mark, and the demon vanished in a burst of flames.
She faced the lady. "Come with me and we'll find a safe place," Neima urged, her voice cold, and she furrowed her eyebrow, clenching her fist.
They ran towards the door, bursting out of the house into a scene of chaos. Marcelene, along with other demon hunter and huntress warriors, were fighting for their lives, trying to save thousands of people in this broken city. The city was in ruins, a clear sign of the fall and the apocalypse that had swept over them. Everyone wanted to leave, to escape the nightmare that had become their reality.
"I guess there's no better place here," the lady commented, her voice heavy with sadness.
"Holy sh*t, how can we find a safe place amidst this chaos?" Neima cursed, her frustration bubbling over.
The clashing sounds of Covyn Reeve's sword, the growls of a demon, the crackle of an electric gun, the whistling of arrows – it was a cacophony of noise. Every demon they killed seemed to be replaced by two more. They came from another dimension, a terrifying, mysterious place, and no one knew how it all began.
Fear filled the air, a heavy weight over the city. People were driven to the edge of madness, their panic was obvious. They cried out in terror, their cries for help lost in the loud noise of the battle. We wanted to save ourselves, not just be saved. We had weapons, but we weren't as strong as the demon hunters and huntresses. They prohibited us from fighting, the death toll too high, the bites of the demons too horrifying, too disgusting to even look at.
People couldn't bear to look at them because of the terrible way those bites ended someone's life.
"Darcy, we need to do something!" Claudia demanded, her voice sharp with urgency. But my hands were trembling, my body frozen with fear.
"H-How can we do that?" I stammered, the words barely audible.
Tears welled up in my eyes, a dam breaking. The chaos, the cries, the screams for help, the sight of people being bitten, their flesh torn by those demons - it was all too much. I couldn't bear living in this nightmare, where every night brought new terror.
Claudia's hand, trembling just as much as mine, rested on top of mine. "We need to face all these fears," her voice shaky, as her eyes welling up with tears as she looked at me.
"I wonder if we can still survive for another day," I said, my voice choked with tears. "Can we bear this nightmare for more years, or will we all die brutally, just like others, just like my family?"
"Yes we can," Claudia responded, leaning her head on my shoulder, her voice a whisper of hope.
Marcelene, moving quickly and with a lot of energy, broke into a house, drawn by a scream. Demons with a strong sense of smell could easily track us down. As I stopped crying and wiped away my tears, I felt like I felt something, a demon's gaze on this house.
"Oh, no, it couldn't be," Claudia whispered, pausing, her own tears quickly wiped away.
We stayed quiet, holding our breath as we heard a crack from the window. My chest tightened, my breathing was short and my eyes welled up with tears again. Then, a loud sound of an arrow being shot and a deep growl, followed by the sound of something slowly disappearing. We both let out a shaky sigh, feeling a sense of relief. We had been saved.
"Too close," I murmured, peering behind the mini cabinet at the window.
I saw the window, a small hole in the wall, and through it, I could see the broken, dim lights of the city. The chaos, the hunters and huntresses fighting for the people in this broken society. In this apocalypse, you had to hide, to try your best not to be found by those demons with their keen sense of smell, if you wanted to survive.
I feel like the only way to save these people are these demon hunters and huntresses warriors. If they weren't going to be arrogant and selfish, if they could save us like this and risk their lives like this then we would stay alive in this apocalypse.
