Chapter 37 - New Friends & Old Foes

Isabella’s POV

Ethan froze in his attempt to reach for me a second time. He lifted his eyes to meet mine, his lips compressed in anger despite the concern in his gaze.

“What? Is this because of Patterson?” he asked icily, venom dripping from his tone. “I can’t even touch you anymore?”

“To hell with James! This has nothing to do with him!” I snapped, my earlier frustration returning briefly. “In fact, to hell with both of you! I’m done with all of this, Ethan. I’m just done…” My voice cracked on that statement, and I suddenly found myself pressed into what has now become a familiar chest. If I wasn't so exhausted, I’m sure Ethan’s mood changes would be giving me whiplash. I’ve never felt such bone-deep weariness before, not even when I’d been sleep-deprived and running on fumes.

I blamed the exhaustion for the next words that slipped past my lips. “I just….I don’t want you to end up in that fire again. I can’t bear the thought of you lgetting hurt.”
