Meliza's POV
"Meliza!" My mother's voice cracked as she ran toward me, her face streaked with tears. Before I could react, she pulled me into a tight embrace, clutching me as though afraid I might disappear again.
"Thank God you're safe," she whispered, her body trembling against mine.
I closed my eyes, letting myself sink into the warmth of her arms. The familiar scent of her perfume wrapped around me, stirring a pang of guilt in my chest. I had left her behind. She had been here, enduring whatever had happened in my absence.
"I'm so sorry," she mumbled as she pulled back, her hands still gripping my arms as if she wasn't ready to let go.
"Mom, there's no need to apologize," I said softly, forcing a weak smile. I could see the exhaustion in her eyes, the worry that hadn't left since the day I was gone. I wished I could ease it, but I knew words weren't enough.
She inhaled shakily, nodding as she wiped at her eyes. "Let's get inside."
