Too Good To Be True

Meliza's POV

"Take your time reading this, Meliza," Attorney Parisan said, his voice even and composed. "If you have any questions, feel free to ask." He added.

He offered me a reassuring smile, but it did nothing to steady the tremor in my hands as I reached for the folder. The weight of it felt heavier than it should have.

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to breathe as I flipped it open. The crisp rustle of paper filled the quiet office as my eyes scanned the words sprawled across the page.

At first, the legal jargon blurred together, the letters swimming before my eyes. But then, one line caught my attention.

My breath hitched as my grip on the paper tightened as my mind struggled to process what I was reading.

No. That can't be right.

I skimmed through the paragraphs again, my heart pounding louder with each word.
