The End of the Good Ol' Days Pt 4

"Alright, Yoshi, we'll need you to perform some physical tests first just to see what we're working with," Dr. Walker said as we walked into the lab

Across the lab were some physical equipment like treadmils and various weights 

I walked towards the treadmill first as to warm up my body for everything else, and after completing everything, I walked back towards Dr. Walker to receive my results"

"Well, well, well, you've been holding out on us, haven't you, Mr. Yoshi," Dr. Walker started. "You have scored the highest physical stats that I've ever seen in this program."

"Really?" I asked "Well, I did some martial arts when I was a child, but that was another life."

"Well, whatever you did, it's put you in a league of your own. Most of our test subjects are addicts and gamblers looking for a payout or average civilians who don't even exercise regularly. You, on the other hand, are remarkable."

I folded my arms across my chest. "So what happens next?"

"Normally, we'd conduct tests over multiple days, but with results like yours, we can expedite the process. We'll take some blood samples to check for diseases before moving on to the next part of our program

"Next part?"

"Yes, well, normally we wouldn't do everything all at once, but with you we can forego the verification period as long as I get your samples into an analyzer."

"Rest assured though, you will be compensated as if you did both segments."

That's a lot of money. Before, it was enough for months of care, but now we might be able to afford advanced care, and we could maybe get good enough treatment to make Shen better.

I pushed aside my apprehension. This was for Shen. With the compensation they promised, I could afford better treatment for her and that's all that mattered to me

I followed Walker to another room, where she prepared a needle. The prick in my arm was brief, and I watched as vials of my blood were collected and stored away. As I sat there waiting, I noticed something strange—a scientist across the room handling a vial filled with a strange, greenish liquid. I couldn't shake the feeling that it was important, but before I could think on it further, Walker returned.

"Alright, Yoshi, before we proceed, we need you to review and sign these documents," Dr. Walker said, handing me a stack of papers.

I glanced over them, my brow furrowing as I skimmed through the dense legal jargon. Non-Disclosure Agreement, waiver of liability, consent to experimental procedures. My gut twisted, but I kept my expression neutral. If I wanted to help Shen, this was my only option.

"Standard protocol?" I asked, pen hovering over the signature line.

Walker nodded, her smile professional but unreadable. "Of course. Just a precaution."

I inhaled deeply and signed. Whatever happened next, I would deal with it.

"Excellent," she said, taking the documents.

"Alright, Yoshi," she said. "Everything looks good. Ready for the next step?"

I hesitated, but only for a moment. "Yes. Let's do this."

What happened next was unlike anything I had expected. I was taken deeper into the facility, past hallways where the sterile smell was replaced by something... off. There was an underlying stench, like something organic but unnatural. I saw doors that required keycards and areas guarded by more silent, expressionless security personnel.

"This way," Walker instructed, leading me to a chamber filled with high-tech machinery. A large cylindrical pod stood in the center, surrounded by glowing monitors.

"Step inside," she said. "It's just a scan. Non-invasive."

I hesitated again but walked forward. The inside of the pod was cool. As soon as I settled inside, the door hissed shut, locking me in darkness. Then, a mechanical hum filled the space.

I took slow, deep breaths, waiting. Minutes passed. Then, I heard something—muffled voices outside the pod.

"His readings are... unusual. Far more compatible than expected."

"Do we proceed?" Walker said

Yes, we can't let him get away after learning how good of a specimen he is" the masculine voice from the lobby said
