Chapter 4

Mabel mistakenly believed I had come to plead for reconciliation. Her gaze was filled with contempt. "I expected more resilience from you. Returning so quickly? Even if you grovel and apologize, I won't forgive you. You've let me down far too many times."

I couldn't suppress a chuckle. "You've misunderstood. I'm here on professional matters."

Mabel's brow furrowed. "You? On business? Brent, I'm well aware of your capabilities. What reputable organization would employ you? You're likely being duped!"

She scrutinized Eric before scoffing, "Dressed in fancy attire, but probably works for some dubious enterprise."

Eric was about to defend me, but I intervened. "It's not worth getting upset over someone like her. We'll see you at the investment meeting. And just to be clear, we're officially done!"

I grinned and waved at Mabel, disregarding her sour expression, and prepared to depart.

With Eric's assistance, I swiftly and efficiently assumed control of the branch office.

When I reviewed the list of companies attending the investment promotion conference, I was taken aback to see Mabel's company included.

"Boss, should we remove this company from the list?"

Eric still recalled the incident at the restaurant previously.

I shook my head. "Let's adhere to protocol."

I was intrigued to see what kind of proposition Mabel and Atlas might present.

The following day, the investment promotion conference proceeded smoothly.

Upon my arrival, the conference hall was already brimming with attendees.

As I was searching the crowd for Eric, Mabel appeared before me with Atlas in tow.

Atlas was attired in a suit, resembling a well-groomed songbird.

"Brent?"

Mabel's expression was a blend of astonishment and disdain upon seeing me. "Your small-time company is also participating in the investment promotion conference?"

I remained silent, offering only a polite smile as I gestured in a direction. "Those responsible for investment proposals should register over there."

My demeanor visibly irked Mabel.

"Brent, we're all here for the conference. What are you trying to accomplish?"

She paused, then frowned. "Also... why have all your belongings vanished from the house?"

"We've separated. Naturally, I took my possessions."

In reality, I had discarded all those items long ago. Retaining them would have been unlucky.

"You're genuinely ending our relationship?" Mabel inquired, her voice a mixture of surprise and disbelief.

In past arguments, I would leave for a few days before returning to her.

However, this time, my cold and resolute demeanor was entirely unfamiliar to her. It was as if something valuable was slipping away.

For the first time, Mabel's tone softened. "Ridley, don't be like this. I know I've been aloof lately, but it's all due to work. Once I secure this deal with the Atticus Group, I'll take you on a vacation. We'll bask in the sunshine, just the two of us. Come back home with me, alright?"

I didn't understand her sudden attempt at reconciliation, but it no longer mattered.

There was no turning back.

"That won't be necessary. I can go there on my own."

My frosty response clearly annoyed Mabel. "Brent, why are you being so harsh? I've already attempted to make amends. What more do you want? With your attitude, who besides me would even tolerate you?"

I sneered. Even now, she maintained her air of superiority.

"Mabel, it's unfortunate, but today, your arrogance will have to yield to me."

Mabel scoffed, "Yield to you? As if! Do you think you're the head of the Atticus Group's investor conference or something?"

Right on cue, Eric took the stage amidst a wave of anticipation. "I hereby declare the commencement of the Atticus Group's investor conference! Now, let's welcome Mr. Brent Atticus, the head of the conference, to the stage!"
