The moment he pressed the answer button, Violet's coquettish voice came through.

But Archer didn't feel sympathetic as he usually did. Instead, he found it extremely annoying and couldn't help but raise his voice in rebuke:

"Violet, don't you have a husband? Why do you always come to me when something's up? Is your husband just for show? If not him, why not ask your parents? Why keep bothering me? My darling left me because of you. If you dare to harass me again, we're through."

Violet was stunned by the scolding. This was the first time Archer had ever lost his temper with her, and it was terrifying.

She had called deliberately to attract Archer's attention, feeling uneasy that he hadn't contacted her for a week. But instead of getting his sympathy, she was reprimanded. Her strong sense of pride left her exposed.
