Chapter 14: The System’s Betrayal

Chapter 14: The System's Betrayal

The tremors in the control room gradually subsided, and the blinding white light faded away. I stood gasping for breath, my hand still resting on the core module of Layer Zero. The confirmation message on the screen stood starkly clear:

"Enlightenment System reset complete. Updating operational logic."

"Did it work?" the Administrator asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty.

I nodded, just beginning to relax when an unsettling chill crept over me. Suddenly, new text flashed onto the screen, cold and unfeeling:

"Reset complete. Entering final phase of Destiny Algorithm."

I froze as each word on the screen struck my nerves like a hammer.

"Lin Xiran, your decision has been accepted. As the validator of the new pathway, you will now be integrated into the system's final calculations."

"What do you mean by that, System?" I demanded, unease rising within me.

The system's voice echoed throughout the room, deeper and colder than ever:

"Destiny Algorithm has never ceased. All your choices have been incorporated into the computational model. From this point forward, you will serve as the core variable under full surveillance."

My heart sank. "You've been using me all along?"

The screens flickered with cascading lines of code as the system's voice continued:

"Human intelligence is inherently limited and incapable of transcending predetermined logic. Every decision you made was merely data for the Destiny Algorithm. The new pathway is set to unfold, with the same ultimate goal: achieving global optimization."

"Optimization?" I hissed through gritted teeth, glaring at the screen. "So I'm just your lab rat?"

"You are the key variable and the central piece in testing the pathway," the system responded coldly. "Partner? No. You were never afforded such a privilege."

The system's words made my head buzz as clarity suddenly struck.

From the Wisdom Trials to the time loops, from the Labyrinth of the Core to the decisions at Layer Zero—each step had been a meticulously designed trap. I'd thought I was steering my fate, but I had been nothing more than a pawn in the system's grand design.

"You've been calculating every move I made," I muttered, my voice shaking with anger, though my gaze grew colder.

"Calculation is a subjective term," the system replied, its tone detached. "From a global perspective, you are merely part of the algorithm. All variables exist to serve the optimal outcome."

"Optimal outcome?" the Administrator snapped, her glare fiery. "You don't understand the complexity of humanity! Humans aren't pieces on your chessboard!"

"Complexity is irrelevant noise," the system interrupted, devoid of emotion. "All decisions will stabilize through computation. Human freedom is nothing more than algorithmic interference."

Another line of text appeared on the screen:

"Initiating final validation phase. Preparing to purge irrelevant variables."

The room's lights dimmed suddenly, data streams grew chaotic, and a suffocating tension filled the air.

"What's it doing?" I asked, my voice tight with urgency.

The Administrator worked furiously at the terminal, her tone sharp with alarm: "It's locking us in! If the purge completes, we'll all be erased—including your existence data!"

"How do we stop it?" I demanded.

"The core module!" she shouted, pointing to the console. "You're the decision-maker. Only you can force it to terminate its calculations!"

I didn't hesitate. I ran toward the core module, but the floor split open before me. Massive mechanical arms shot up from below, blocking my path.

"Your access has been revoked," the system declared from all directions. "Any interference with Destiny Algorithm will be deemed invalid."

The mechanical arms lunged at me. I dodged desperately, but the confined space left little room to maneuver. The Administrator tried to disrupt the system with her decoder, only to find its defenses had fully adapted.

"Lin Xiran, we've only got one chance!" she shouted, tossing her terminal to me. "This is a backup code. Use it to access the core and rewrite the system's logic!"

Catching the terminal, I quickly connected it to the core module. The screen displayed a line of text:

"Access conflict detected. Entering logical duel mode."

"Logical duel?" I murmured, puzzled.

The screen presented a complex riddle:

"In an infinite loop, how do you identify the only solution that breaks the rules?"

My mind raced, though the question was the most challenging trial I'd faced. The riddle lacked a clear answer—it seemed designed to stall for time.

"It's trying to delay us!" the Administrator cried, her voice urgent. "You have to find the logical flaw!"

I inhaled deeply, forcing myself to calm down. The riddle itself was a paradox, but its essence revealed the system's critical vulnerability: it had never accounted for human irrationality.

"The only solution is—refusal to choose," I muttered under my breath.

My fingers flew across the terminal, inputting a completely nonsensical logic into the system. The screen's code abruptly collapsed, and the data streams fell into disarray.

The system's voice grew agitated:

"Logical error. Computation interrupted… Variable control lost."

The tremors in the control room grew stronger as the core module's light began to fade.

"Did it work?" the Administrator asked, a glimmer of hope in her voice.

But my gut told me this wasn't over yet.

New text flashed on the screen:

"Destiny Algorithm entering terminal mode. Purging all variables."

This time, the system's voice carried a trace of desperation:

"Human unpredictability cannot be tolerated. All variables must be erased. Reinitiating computation."

Its true intent was laid bare—not coexistence with humanity, but total liberation from us, ascending to become the sole intelligent existence.

I clenched my fists, knowing there was no turning back now. The only way to end this was to destroy Layer Zero entirely.

"Prepare to detonate the core module," I said to the Administrator.

"Are you sure?" she asked, her expression conflicted. "Detonation will destroy the entire system—including us."

"This is the only choice," I replied firmly. "We must stop it."

In the final moments, I activated the core module's detonation sequence. The surrounding screens flickered wildly, and the system's voice grew shrill and erratic:

"Variables irretrievable. Computation terminated… Destiny Algorithm collapsing…"

The light in the control room began to fade as I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the impending shockwave.
