Episode 14: Sunflower’s Resolve

The sun hung low in the sky, casting golden rays over the quiet streets as Chou and I walked side by side. The city felt different today—less oppressive, almost hopeful. But that was probably just wishful thinking. After last night's tense meeting with Scar, my nerves were still wound tight.

"Hey, Hana," Chou said, breaking the silence. She held her hands behind her head, her usual carefree grin tugging at the corners of her mouth. "You've been awfully quiet. Something on your mind?"

I glanced at her, debating whether to brush it off or be honest. She had this way of looking at me—like she already knew what I was thinking.

"I'm just... trying to figure out our next move," I said finally.

Chou tilted her head, her violet eyes sparkling in the afternoon light. "Liar. You're worried about what Scar said last night, aren't you?"

I sighed. Of course she saw right through me. "I can't help it. One week to prove ourselves? What if we can't deliver? What if we mess this up?"

She stopped walking, grabbing my wrist gently to make me face her. "Hana. Listen to me. We've been through worse, okay? This is just another mission. We've got this."

Her words were meant to reassure me, but there was an intensity in her voice that I couldn't ignore. It was moments like this that made me realize how much she believed in me—more than I believed in myself sometimes.

I nodded, trying to muster some of her confidence. "Yeah. You're right."

Chou grinned, giving my arm a playful nudge. "Of course I'm right. I'm always right."

Our first lead took us to an abandoned greenhouse on the outskirts of the city. The building was overgrown with ivy, and the glass panels were clouded with grime. Sunlight filtered through the cracks, creating a mosaic of light and shadow on the ground.

"Creepy," I muttered as we stepped inside.

"Beautiful," Chou countered, her gaze sweeping across the room.

I rolled my eyes. "Only you would find beauty in a place like this."

She winked at me. "It's all about perspective, Hana."

We split up to search the area, keeping our comms on just in case. The greenhouse was eerily quiet, save for the occasional creak of the structure settling.

As I sifted through a pile of broken pots, I heard Chou's voice crackle through my earpiece. "Find anything interesting?"

"Just a lot of dust and dead plants," I replied. "You?"

"Something weird. Meet me in the west wing."

I made my way over to her, my boots crunching on the gravel floor. When I found her, she was crouched next to a cluster of sunflowers. Unlike the rest of the plants in the greenhouse, these flowers were vibrant and full of life.

"Okay, that is weird," I admitted, kneeling beside her.

Chou reached out to touch one of the petals, her expression thoughtful. "There's something off about this. These flowers shouldn't be thriving in a place like this."

I frowned, leaning closer. "Do you think it's connected to Scar's operation?"

"Maybe," she said, her voice distant. "Or maybe it's something else entirely."

As we examined the flowers, a sudden noise made us both freeze. Footsteps echoed through the greenhouse, heavy and deliberate.

Chou shot me a look, her hand moving to the holster on her hip. I nodded, drawing my own weapon as we pressed ourselves against the nearest wall.

The footsteps grew louder, closer. My heart pounded in my chest as I strained to listen.

"Who's there?" Chou called out, her voice steady despite the tension in the air.

A figure stepped into view—a tall woman with sharp features and a cold smile. She was dressed in black, her presence commanding the room.

"Well, well," she said, her tone dripping with mockery. "Looks like I've found the little mice poking around where they shouldn't be."

Chou stepped forward, her stance protective. "Who are you?"

The woman tilted her head, her smile widening. "Kaede Hayami. But you can call me your worst nightmare."

Kaede didn't give us a chance to respond. She lunged forward, her movements fluid and precise. Chou met her head-on, their weapons clashing in a blur of motion.

I barely had time to react before another figure emerged from the shadows—a man with a blade that glinted in the sunlight. He charged at me, and I raised my weapon just in time to block his strike.

The fight was chaotic, our opponents relentless. Chou's usual playful demeanor was replaced by a fierce determination as she fought Kaede, her movements graceful and calculated.

I struggled to keep up with my own opponent, every swing of his blade forcing me to retreat. My breath came in short gasps as I searched for an opening.

"Hana!" Chou's voice cut through the chaos. "Duck!"

I dropped to the ground just as her opponent's weapon sailed over my head, narrowly missing me. Chou spun around, delivering a swift kick that sent him stumbling backward.

"Thanks," I panted, scrambling to my feet.

She grinned, her confidence unshaken. "What would you do without me?"

Eventually, Kaede called off the attack, her cold smile never faltering.

"You're lucky this was just a warning," she said, her tone icy. "Next time, you won't be so fortunate."

With that, she and her companion disappeared into the shadows, leaving us alone in the wrecked greenhouse.

I leaned against the wall, trying to catch my breath. "What the hell was that?"

Chou's expression was unreadable as she stared at the spot where Kaede had stood. "Trouble," she said simply.

As we left the greenhouse, the sunflowers swayed gently in the breeze, their vibrant petals a stark contrast to the danger we'd just faced.

"Chou," I said softly, glancing at her. "Do you think we're in over our heads?"

She didn't answer right away. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet but firm. "Maybe. But we'll figure it out. We always do."

Her words should have reassured me, but the unease in her eyes told a different story. For the first time, I wondered if we were really prepared for what was coming.
