Chapter 12: Breaking Points

Aria didn't get a break over the weekend. While working on their essay in her room, she could not help but think of Ethan's confession about his father. She'd not expect his vulnerable side to catch her off guard, yet she did. She wanted to know more.

Her phone buzzed with a text that brought her back to reality.

Ethan: You free?

Aria: I am busy with the essay. Why?

Ethan: Meet at the park. Bring snacks.

Aria: Why should I?

Ethan: I won't stop texting you if you don't.

She let out a sigh and shook her head but couldn't stop herself from smiling a little. She took a bag of chips and a jacket and left.

---.

Ethan was waiting for her by the swings with a little less cocky confidence than usual.

"You sure know how to interrupt someone's flow," Aria said, tossing the bag of crisps in his direction.

"Productivity is overrated". Ethan said, catching the bag and opening it. "Thanks for coming.".

Aria sat on the swing beside him, watching as he looked at the empty park. "What's going on?".

For a moment, he stayed quiet before he spoke. My father arrived at my home early this morning. He told me he wanted to take me to lunch. As if we are a joyful family.

"Did you go?" Aria asked.

Ethan shook his head. "No. I told him to leave, and he didn't take it well.

"Did he…?Aria stopped talking, anxious about Ethan's unspoken words.

"No," Ethan said quickly. "He didn't touch me." But he made it clear he's not going anywhere.

Aria touched her hand on his hand. "Hey Ethan, you don't have to go through this alone."

He looked at her; he was not certain of her. "Bennett, you are far too good for this town,"

"Stop diverting the subject," she said.

Ethan chuckled softly but didn't pull away from her touch. "Thanks, Aria.".

---.

Just then Aria received a text and broke the moment.

Ryan wants to have a discussion. Please.

Ethan saw the difference in her face. "What's wrong?".

"I guess you're probably right," she said. "He wants to talk.".

Ethan's jaw tightened. He really doesn't know when to stop, does he?".

"I can handle it," Aria said, getting up.

"I'll be going with you," Ethan said, rising as well.

"No, Ethan. "I can do this myself," said Aria.

"Too bad," Ethan replied. I won't let that person trap you again.

Aria complained but stayed quiet.

---.

Ryan was leaning on his car in the school parking lot looking nervous when they met him.

"Aria," Ryan said, standing straighter at the sight of her. He gazed at Ethan and his jaw clenchered. "Why is he here?".

Ethan said I don't like what you said, I don't trust you.

Ryan didn't listen, looking at Aria. I just wanted to say I'm sorry again. I am aware that I hurt you and I hate myself.

Ethan mumbled, "You should." Ryan looked at him.

"Leave it to me Ethan" Aria said, shooting him a look.

Ryan took a step closer to her; please. Aria, I want to make things right. I miss you. I miss us.".

Aria folded her arms; her expression was blank. I'm not chasing you anymore, that's why you miss me.

Ryan said "That's Not True " "I was stupid, okay? I won't play your little games anymore. I just want one more chance.

Before Aria could say anything, Ethan stepped in between them. "You heard her. She's done with you.".

Ryan shoved Ethan's shoulder. This doesn't concern you, Carter.

"Absolutely it does," Ethan said in a low voice.

"Stop it!"Stop it!" Aria yelled, stepping between them. "I don't want this. Either of you.".

the boys did not move, their anger dispelled by this

"I don't belong to either of you," Aria said shakingly. "Ryan, we're over. And Ethan, you really need to stop acting like you own me."

Ethan's face became serious but said nothing. Ryan appeared to be very sad but agreed.

"Fine," Ryan said quietly. "But I will not choose to give up on us, Aria."

He left, harshly leaving her and Ethan stiff with silence.

---.

Ethan spoke first as they walked back to the park. "You're right. I shouldn't have tried to fight your battles for you.

"Wow" was all Aria could manage, surprised. Thanks for saying that.

"But I won't stop looking out for you, Ethan," he said. "Its your choice whether you like it or not"

Aria didn't say any more.
