The battlefield was silent, save for the lingering crackle of fading energy where the Enforcer had once stood. The oppressive weight of its presence had vanished, but Aric knew better than to relax.
Kaelith wiped the sweat from her brow, still catching her breath. "So… what now? We just killed a divine enforcer. Pretty sure that puts us on some kind of celestial hit list."
Aric chuckled, sheathing his sword. "We were already on that list. This just bumped us up to priority targets."
System Notification:
[Divine Enforcer Neutralized.]
[Irregular Path Strengthened – System Restrictions Loosening.]
[Warning: Further deviations will trigger greater responses.]
Kaelith groaned. "Great. That sounds like an 'enjoy your victory while you can' kind of message."
Aric glanced at the Second Pillar, still glowing with residual energy from his awakening. The Nexus Archive was his now—a forbidden well of knowledge meant only for those who defied the Tower's control. He could feel its influence settling into his mind, rewriting the very foundation of what he could perceive and achieve.
His status screen flickered.
Status Update: Aric Valen
[Title: The Irregular]
[Authority: Nexus Archive (Partial)]
[New Passive Acquired: System Breaker – Certain restrictions imposed by the Tower can now be bypassed.]
[New Path: Ascending Beyond Order]
Aric's grin widened. Now this is interesting.
Before he could process further, the air around them pulsed.
Kaelith snapped to attention. "Oh, what now?"
A golden portal shimmered into existence, its edges humming with divine energy. Unlike the Enforcer's rift, this one was… different. It wasn't an attack—it was a summons.
From within, a presence stepped forward.
A Visitor from the Beyond
A man in ornate silver robes emerged, his golden eyes carrying the weight of millennia. His presence wasn't hostile, yet it radiated an authority that demanded attention. His long silver hair cascaded over his shoulders, and in his hand, he carried a staff embedded with celestial gemstones.
System Alert:
[Unknown Entity Detected.]
[Name: Ascalon, The Arbitrator]
[Title: Herald of the Celestial Court]
[Classification: Divine Observer]
[Threat Level: Variable]
Kaelith tensed, daggers ready. "Another one? We just got rid of the last guy."
Ascalon's gaze swept over them before resting on Aric. "You've disrupted the balance."
Aric raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I tend to do that."
Ascalon sighed, as if dealing with a particularly troublesome student. "The Enforcer was meant to contain your anomaly. Yet you… broke it."
Aric shrugged. "It tried to kill me first."
"The Tower does not tolerate deviation." Ascalon's voice was calm, yet firm. "And yet, here you stand."
Kaelith rolled her eyes. "If you're here to lecture us, you can save your breath."
To their surprise, Ascalon chuckled. "No. I am not here to fight you."
Aric crossed his arms. "Then what are you here for?"
The Arbitrator's expression turned serious. "To warn you."
A pulse of energy radiated from his staff, and suddenly, the world around them shifted. The mist of the Veiled Expanse darkened, twisting into a vast vision.
Aric and Kaelith found themselves staring at a battlefield unlike anything they had ever seen.
A War Beyond the Tower
The scene before them was chaos incarnate. Titans clashed against celestial beings, entire worlds crumbling under their might. The sky was a canvas of destruction, painted with divine flames and abyssal voids. Armies of forgotten warriors—some wearing the same sigil as the Enforcer—fought against forces that defied description.
At the heart of the battle stood a lone figure.
Unlike the gods and overseers, this being radiated something different. It wasn't bound by divine law, nor by the Tower's control.
It was an Irregular.
And it was winning.
Ascalon's voice echoed. "This is a glimpse of what is to come. A war that has been brewing long before you arrived."
Aric's eyes narrowed. "And where do I fit into this?"
The vision faded, and Ascalon turned to him. "You are walking the same path as they once did. Those who defy the Tower's rule either perish… or become something even the gods fear."
Kaelith shivered. "You're saying Aric might end up like that guy?"
Ascalon's golden eyes locked onto Aric's. "I'm saying the Tower will not allow it to happen again."
A tense silence followed.
Then, Ascalon took a step back, the portal behind him glowing brighter.
"I have delivered my warning. Your path is your own, Irregular."
Aric smirked. "Appreciate it. But I don't plan on stopping."
Ascalon gave him a long look before sighing. "Then may the gods have mercy on those who stand in your way."
With that, he stepped through the portal, vanishing into the ether.
The silence that followed was heavy.
Kaelith exhaled. "Well… that wasn't ominous at all."
Aric stretched, rolling his shoulders. "If the Tower's scared, that means I'm doing something right."
Kaelith gave him a look. "Yeah, but scared gods tend to do stupid things."
Aric's grin widened. "Then let's make them panic."
As the Second Pillar's energy settled, Aric felt something else stirring deep within the Nexus Archive.
A hidden path was opening.
And at the end of it?
The next step toward true freedom.
