The warmth of Alexander's hand lingered as Mia followed him to a small café on the corner of the park. The place was nearly empty, its cozy interior glowing under the soft, amber lights. The scent of fresh coffee and baked goods wafted through the air, wrapping around Mia like a comforting blanket.
Alexander gestured to a corner booth, and Mia slid into the seat, her mind still buzzing with questions. She watched as he ordered two cups of coffee and a couple of pastries before joining her. His movements were calm, deliberate, as though he had all the time in the world, yet there was a quiet intensity in his eyes that suggested he understood more than he let on.
They sat in silence for a moment, the only sounds coming from the clinking of cups and the hum of the café's old radio. Mia, unsure of where to start, traced the rim of her cup with her finger, her thoughts still tangled.
"You don't have to talk about it if you're not ready," Alexander said softly, his voice cutting through the haze in her mind. "But I'm here to listen if you want to."
Mia looked up, meeting his gaze. There was no pity in his eyes, only genuine concern. It was strange, she thought, how a complete stranger could offer more understanding in a single moment than her family had in years. She took a deep breath, deciding to trust him, if only a little.
"I left my engagement party tonight," Mia began, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "I found out my fiancé and my stepsister have been... involved. It wasn't just tonight. It's been happening for a while."
Alexander nodded, his expression unreadable but attentive. He didn't interrupt, letting her continue at her own pace.
"They've always schemed against me," Mia continued, the bitterness creeping into her voice. "Clara—she's my stepsister, but she's also... my father's illegitimate child. She's always been jealous, always wanted what I had, even if it wasn't much. And Jason, he—" She paused, shaking her head. "I thought he was different. I thought he loved me."
"I'm sorry," Alexander said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of sincerity. "Betrayal cuts deep, especially from those you trust."
Mia nodded, grateful for his understanding. "I couldn't stay there. I needed to get away, to figure out what to do next."
Alexander leaned back slightly, his gaze thoughtful. "Sometimes, the best way to find clarity is to step away from the chaos. You've taken the first step by leaving. What do you plan to do now?"
"I don't know," Mia admitted. "I didn't have a plan. I just knew I couldn't stay."
A small smile curved Alexander's lips. "Sometimes, not knowing is the best place to start. It leaves room for possibilities."
Mia tilted her head, curious. "And what possibilities are you talking about?"
Alexander's smile widened just a fraction, his eyes glinting with something Mia couldn't quite place. "How about a fresh start? A new place, new people, new opportunities. Away from the shadows that have been following you."
Mia considered his words, the idea both terrifying and liberating. "And where would I find such a place?"
Alexander leaned forward slightly, his voice low and inviting. "Come with me. I can offer you that fresh start, if you're willing to take the chance."
