The early morning sky glowed with hues of crimson and orange as Kaelan's group finally emerged from the dark forest teeming with dangers. The crisp morning air was refreshing, though it did little to erase the fatigue lingering from the battle the night before. Gravin exhaled heavily, his sword still coated with the black blood of orcs, while Azura busied herself inspecting the group's condition with simple healing spells.
"How much farther until we reach the next village?" Lyra asked, glancing at the worn map in her hands. Her voice carried exhaustion, though her resolve remained firm.
"If we keep moving without rest, we might reach Eldran Village by nightfall," Gravin replied. "But we need to rest. Everyone's exhausted."
Kaelan stood atop a small hill, gazing toward the horizon where the village was supposed to lie. "Something doesn't feel right," he said quietly. The blue flame within him pulsed unnaturally, warning of an unseen danger.
Before anyone could respond, a faint rumble echoed in the distance, like the pounding of hooves approaching rapidly. They exchanged wary glances before Gravin barked a command. "Hide! We don't know who they are."
They moved quickly, slipping behind the large trees surrounding them. From the cover of leaves, Kaelan peered down at the dusty road that stretched below the hill. A group of mounted soldiers appeared, clad in dark armor emblazoned with an unfamiliar emblem. Leading them was a towering man with long, silver hair, wielding a massive spear that glowed with a dark red aura.
"Varion's forces?" Lyra whispered, her expression turning grim.
Gravin shook his head. "No. That's not Varion's emblem. But they're not allies either."
The riders halted directly beneath the hill, as if their leader had sensed the group's presence. The silver-haired man dismounted, driving his spear into the ground, releasing an aura that made the air around them vibrate.
"I know you're here," he said, his deep voice echoing. "I have no intention of fighting unless you force my hand. Come out."
Kaelan's heart pounded. He looked to Gravin for guidance. "What do we do?" he asked in a low voice.
"If they want a fight, we won't back down," Gravin replied, gripping his sword tightly. "But we might learn something from them."
Cautiously, the group emerged from their hiding spots, standing before the riders who vastly outnumbered them. The silver-haired man's eyes narrowed as he studied each of them.
"So, this is the group carrying the Eternal Flame Crystal," he said with a mocking tone. "I didn't expect you to be mere adventurers."
"Who are you?" Kaelan demanded, struggling to contain his emotions. The blue energy within him flared in response to the tension, heat coursing through his veins.
The man smirked. "My name is Valdrik. I am one of Varion's Ten Generals of Darkness. But today, I haven't come to fight. I bring a message from my master."
Kaelan stiffened at the name. One of the Ten Generals. A true threat stood before them, yet this man seemed in no hurry to attack.
"What's your message?" Azura asked, her voice calm despite the wariness in her gaze.
Valdrik raised his spear, pointing it directly at Kaelan. "Varion knows about the Crystal you carry. He knows you are the new Guardian. And he wants you to understand… there is nowhere in this world you can hide. He will find you, and when he does, he will reclaim what is rightfully his."
Kaelan clenched his fists, the blue fire in his hands flaring brighter. "If he wants it so badly, tell him to come and get it himself!"
Valdrik chuckled darkly. "Your courage is impressive, boy. But don't be mistaken—Varion is in no rush. He enjoys watching you slowly lose hope. I'm merely a pawn in his grand plan."
"If you're just a pawn, why are you here?" Gravin interjected, his tone sharp.
Valdrik looked at him with a cold smile. "To warn you. Or perhaps… to test you."
Without warning, Valdrik drove his spear into the ground, unleashing a wave of red energy that surged toward the group, knocking them backward. It wasn't a full attack, but it was enough to demonstrate his power.
"I'll see you on the battlefield, Guardian," he said before mounting his horse again. The riders turned and departed, leaving the group shaken by the encounter.
Kaelan slowly rose to his feet, his eyes burning with determination. "He came just to warn us… but he doesn't realize. We'll be ready for whatever they throw at us."
Gravin placed a hand on his shoulder. "We need to move faster. Eldran Village may be the last safe place before the real storm begins."
With renewed resolve, the group resumed their journey, prepared to face the ever-growing threats looming on the horizon.
---
As Kaelan's group resumed their journey, the atmosphere grew tense. Their footsteps were nearly silent on the rocky path, but their minds were filled with questions and worries. Valdrik's words echoed in their ears.
"Varion knows where we are," Azura murmured, her eyes fixed ahead. "He even sent one of his generals to deliver a message. We need to be on high alert."
Gravin, walking at the front, glanced back. "I know it's hard, but that warning could also be an opportunity. If they know about us, we also know that they won't attack recklessly. That gives us time to prepare."
"But will that be enough?" Lyra asked, her voice laced with doubt. "He said there's no safe place. What if he's right?"
Kaelan, who had been silent, suddenly stopped. He looked up at the darkening sky, signaling the approach of night. "I don't care how strong they are or how big their army is," he said firmly. "This crystal chose me, and I'll protect it to my last breath. We just have to keep moving and become stronger."
Lyra glanced at him, seemingly ready to argue, but seeing the determination in Kaelan's eyes, she nodded quietly.
---
Nightfall arrived, and they decided to camp near a small river. Azura lit a campfire with her spell while Gravin took on the watch duty. Kaelan sat by the riverbank, letting the cold water touch his hands. The faint glow of the Eternal Flame Crystal in his chest shimmered under the moonlight, reflecting a soft blue light.
Azura approached him, carrying a cup of warm water. "Are you okay?" she asked gently.
Kaelan looked at her for a moment before nodding. "I've just been thinking about all of this. About the responsibility that suddenly fell on my shoulders. Sometimes, I feel like I'm not ready."
Azura offered a small smile, sitting beside him. "No one's ever really ready for something this big, Kaelan. But you're not alone. We're all here for you."
Kaelan took a deep breath, then gave a faint smile. "Thank you, Azura. I appreciate that."
The tranquil moment didn't last long. In the distance, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed, accompanied by a low growl that made the hair on their necks stand. Gravin, standing near the campfire, immediately drew his sword.
"We're not alone," he said sharply.
Kaelan and Azura quickly stood, joining the others around the campfire. A massive shadow emerged from the darkness, followed by the clinking sound of chains dragging on the ground. A giant Orc, larger and more powerful than any they had faced before, appeared. Its red eyes burned with hatred, and in its hands was a massive spiked club that looked terrifying.
"It's a trap," Gravin muttered. "They never really left."
The creature growled, swinging its massive club toward them. Gravin leaped forward, blocking the strike with his sword. The impact rang out loudly, causing the ground beneath them to tremble.
"Attack from the sides!" Gravin shouted as he struggled to hold back the Orc's strength.
Kaelan leaped into the air, letting his blue fire blaze around his body. He shot forward at incredible speed, striking the creature with fiery attacks that lit up the night. The Orc roared in pain but didn't falter.
"This thing is stronger than we thought!" Azura called out, trying to shield Lyra with protective magic.
Lyra, gripping her bow tightly, tried to aim for the creature's eyes. Her arrows flew swiftly, but the Orc managed to deflect them with its massive club.
"We need to work together!" Kaelan shouted. "Gravin, drive it toward the river! I've got a plan."
Gravin nodded, redirecting his attacks to force the creature to retreat. Azura and Lyra provided support with ranged spells and arrows, while Kaelan gathered his blue fire energy.
When the creature reached the riverbank, Kaelan surged forward with incredible speed, disarming the Orc by kicking its club away. Then, with a final strike, he unleashed a torrent of blue flames that engulfed the creature entirely. In moments, the beast collapsed, its body smoldering on the riverbank.
Kaelan panted heavily, his body dimly glowing after expending so much energy. "This is only the beginning," he said quietly, staring into the darkness.
Gravin patted his shoulder. "You did well, Kaelan. But we need to stay alert. If they know we're here, they'll send more."
The group gathered around the campfire again, realizing that their journey would only grow more dangerous. Yet beneath the fear, there was a growing resolve that together, they could face whatever lay ahead.
