Chapter 4

The large display depicted a scene from our residence. Lily had just finished bathing, and I was perched on the bed, my face clouded. Lily approached me carefully, as was her custom.

"Darling, the shower's perfect now, and the bathroom's warm. Would you like to freshen up?"

I remained unresponsive to Lily's suggestion. Instead, I hurled my mobile to the floor with a resounding smash, causing Lily to yelp. Clad only in a bath towel, she huddled on the ground, shielding her head.

"You jezebel! After all I've done for you? How could you?" I bellowed as I neared her, smashing my fist into the wall by her ear. Blood immediately trickled from my knuckles.

Lily remained silent, continuing to weep.

My rage escalated, and I struck Lily across the cheek.

"You don't deserve to be with me. Leave!"

Lily gazed at me, her expression pained and eyes brimming. Following my tirade, she fled the premises without changing.

The footage concluded with Lily trembling in the chilly air, crouched helplessly, whispering, "Why won't you trust me? I'm terrified. Sweetheart, please bring me home?"

The image froze, and comments flooded in.

[How can such men exist? Don't married women deserve their own social lives?]

[Even if Lily erred, is it right to strike a woman? Jack truly shames all men.]

[Did no one notice Lily bathed first to warm the bathroom for Jack? How could Jack let such a thoughtful, kind wife out in just a towel in winter? Forget danger, she could freeze to death in those conditions.]

[While Jack was wrong to hit her, what if Lily did something awful that made Jack lose his composure?]

The majority of comments condemned me, with only occasional voices attempting to defend me, quickly drowned out by the hostility.

The judge rapped his gavel.

"On the first count of domestic abuse, the defendant Jack is found not guilty."
