Chapter 8

The smell of disinfectant flooded my nostrils as I woke up in the hospital.

Dr. Bennett sat by my bedside, his eyes full of pity.

Before I could speak, he voluntarily explained everything to me.

"Lorne took blood from Fabiana and her child. The kid's fine, but Fabiana went into shock due to excessive blood loss. We managed to save her, but she's practically as good as gone."

"As for Lorne," Dr. Bennett paused.

"He lost his mind."

"Twenty-six stab wounds. Died on the spot."

"The police found a note in his pocket. It was more of an apology letter than a suicide note. It was crammed with 'I'm sorry's, and the last line read -

Felicity, I failed your true love."

"Do you want to see it?"

I gazed out the window, my heart a jumble of emotions amidst the horror.

The snow was still heavy, weighing down the tree branches beyond their ability to spring back.

After a long moment, I slowly spoke.

"No."

No need to look. Let all those apologies dissipate in the wind.
