Evelyn sat at her desk, glaring at the email on her laptop. It was a thinly veiled accusation, carefully worded to sow doubt in her leadership. The sender? Martin Greaves, one of the oldest board members at Chase Enterprises and a man who had always made it clear he thought Evelyn was too young and inexperienced to run the company.
The subject line read, "Concerns Regarding Recent Company Direction." The body of the email listed several vague "issues," from questionable decisions to supposed lapses in judgment. The final sentence sent her blood boiling:
The board will convene to discuss these matters at tomorrow's emergency meeting.
Evelyn leaned back in her chair, her hands clenched into fists. The last thing she needed was internal sabotage when there were external threats like Victor Hart circling. She knew some board members had been waiting for an opportunity to oust her, and Martin was leading the charge.
Adrian knocked lightly on her office door before stepping inside, his sharp eyes immediately catching the tension in her expression. "What's going on?"
Evelyn hesitated for a moment, debating whether to involve him. But she knew she couldn't handle this alone—not with her father gone. "The board is turning against me," she said, handing him her laptop.
Adrian read the email, his jaw tightening. "Greaves is stirring the pot, isn't he?"
She nodded. "He's been gunning for me since day one. He thinks I'm just a placeholder until someone more... seasoned takes over."
Adrian's lips curved into a sardonic smile. "Seasoned? That's code for someone he can control."
Evelyn sighed, rubbing her temples. "I can't let them undermine me. Not now, when we're so close to uncovering the truth about my father's death."
Adrian closed the laptop and placed it on her desk. "Then don't give them the chance. Hit them first."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Hit them how?"
"With facts, strategy, and a little charm," Adrian said, leaning casually against her desk. "Show them that you're not just your father's daughter—you're the boss. But first, we need to figure out who's backing Greaves. He wouldn't risk this alone."
Evelyn nodded. "Agreed. But how do we find out?"
Adrian smirked. "Leave that to me."
