Chapter 34 - Unit Assignment (3)

Haaaa.

I stepped into building 2, the cool air of the lobby hitting me as I made my way to the elevator.

The place was quiet, the kind of quiet that made you feel like you were the only person in the world.

I glanced at the room number River had sent me. Room 55. I then pressed the fifth floor button.

The elevator hummed softly as it ascended, and I leaned against the wall, as I thought about how this meeting would go.

Soon the elevator came to a stop. When the doors slided open, I walked out into the hallway, my eyes scanning the numbers on each floor until I found the room with the number 55.

I hesitated for a moment, then knocked. A few seconds later, a sweet sounding voice called out from the inside, "I'm coming!"

The door opened, and a girl with black hair peeked her head out. Her eyes lit up when she saw me, and she smiled warmly.

"Hi Nathan! I'm so glad you could make it," River said, opening the door fully to let me in.

She was wearing a plain white T-shirt and black trousers, simple yet effortlessly stylish.

I couldn't help but just notice how pretty she looked. Her features were soft yet striking coupled with her genuine looking smile.

She may not be on the level of Elizabeth Bathory or Natasha but she was beautiful nonetheless. So it's a shame, she's just a background character.

An extra. Someone like her definitely deserved more than a background role.

She led me into the living room, as I took a moment to look around.

First of all her apartment was slightly bigger than mine.

The space was cozy, with a couple of couches and a low table in the center. She definitely took her time in arranging the place.

Anyway, sitting on one end of a couch, was a boy with silver hair, and blue eyes with a well built physique and his usual air of indifference like he couldn't be bothered to care about anything—Lucas.

Next to him as always was Maria, who was currently listening to music on her phone, her foot tapping to the beat lightly.

On the other side of the room, near the window, was a boy with brown hair, a muscular but not overly bulky frame, and an aura of arrogance that was practically radiating off him. Marcus Draden.

He was one of the main casts. One of the Terrans that defected to the side of the Fantasians.

He didn't even bother to glance our or rather my way, and just kept staring out the window like he was too good to acknowledge me or anyone else.

River clapped her hands lightly, drawing everyone's attention. "Alright, now that we're all here, let's get started. But first, introductions!" She said, her tone firm but polite.

She then added, "I'll go last. Who wants to go first?"

Lucas was the first to speak, his voice flat and apathetic. "Lucas Draken. Let's just get this over with."

Maria then pouted and elbowed him in the stomach, clearly annoyed with his attitude.

"Be nice, Lucas!" She scolded, before turning towards the rest of us with a bright smile on her face.

"I'm Maria Greensworth! Really excited to work with you all. Let's do our best!"

Haa. Exactly like Natasha. Damn.

Marcus rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, his tone dripping with condescension. "Marcus Draden. Don't expect me to carry you all."

I suppressed a sigh. This is going about as well as I thought it would. Anyway, it's my turn now, so I'm just going to keep it short and to the point.

"Nathaniel Hunt. Pleasure to meet you." I said my tone bordering on apathetic. Well I wasn't really pleased to meet them but hey, I can't just outright say that now can I?

Then finally, River stepped forward, her smile warm and inviting. "I'm River Stone. It's really nice to meet you all, and I'm really looking forward to working together as a team. Let's make this unit the best it can be!"

Her enthusiasm was almost infectious, infact it was very similar to Natasha. But..

Looking around, I could tell the others weren't exactly on the same page.

Lucas looked like he'd rather be anywhere else, Marcus was still glaring out the window, and Maria was busy adjusting her headphones.

As for me, I just want to get this over with.

"Alright," River said while clapping her hands again. "Now that we've introduced ourselves, let's begin this unit meeting. We've got a lot to discuss, so let's make the most of our time together!"

I took a seat on the couch, already groaning inwardly. Haa. This was going to be a long meeting—and an even longer year, no, scratch that, an even longer three years.
