Adam stood in the testing chamber, his eyes glowing faintly golden, his thoughts racing. The new sensation coursing through his body was like nothing he'd ever felt before. He could hear the quiet hum of vast energy pulsing just beneath his skin.
The recruits were led to a sprawling simulated outdoor training field on the other section of the awakening chamber, right after the awakening session has completed.
The atmosphere buzzing with a mix of excitement and tension. The field was a massive expanse of reinforced earth and artificial grass, ringed by towering holographic panels that displayed ongoing activities and records of legendary soldiers who have passed through the same process.
Commander Darius stood before them, with his sharp gaze scanning the group.
"Today, you will begin to familiarize yourselves with your newfound abilities. Over time, you will learn to control your awakened powers. This is critical. Untrained abilities are a liability, not an asset. You have the rest of the day to yourselves for practice."
He pointed toward several designated zones across the field.
"Each area is tailored to test specific types of abilities. The elemental users were directed to the eastern zone. Strength-type users were in the central arena.
Speed or agility specialists, to the west. And those with unique abilities gathered north.
Commander Darius and the rest of the instructors were around on standby, watching and ready to intervene if anyone was to accidentally lose control.
Adam glanced at Eve, her cold aura was shimmering faintly around her as she walked towards him before heading east to join the elemental users.
Seraphina Kennedy was already in the eastern zone, standing out among the recruits with her effortless poise and commanding presence.
Adam made his way to the northern zone for unique abilities. A small number of recruits had joined him, many of their expressions filled with a mix of confusion and awe.
Marcus strutted to the central arena, still glaring at Adam as if his very existence was an affront.
Adam's first exercise was a simple test: focusing on summoning his ability by following the instructions that the system had shown him.
Focus your energy around your hand and imagine what you want to summon.
He closed his eyes, trying to tap into the wellspring of energy he felt within.
As he focused his energy, a sudden flash of golden light erupted from his hands, forming a small sphere that hovered in the air.
The other students in the northern zone stared, some in awe, others in envy. Adam clenched his fists, willing the sphere to dissipate.
Commander Darius was observing this from behind, he walked closer to the Adam after seeing this.
"Good," came his voice behind him. Adam turned to see Commander Darius observing him. "Primordial Light, huh? There have been records of rare and unpredictable abilities before, but apparently, even the great scholars from Arc Erudinia have never found anything of this nature in their records. It seems to be a versatile ability from what I can tell, but it will take you time to master its full usage. Keep practising." He ordered and the students who had stopped what they were doing to watch Adam went back to practising their skills.
Adam nodded, at Commander Darius as a sign of appreciation for the advice. His determination growing.
Over the next few hours, he experimented with his powers, learning that the light could be moulded into constructs.
From temporary shields, beams of energy, and even a glowing blade. Each use drained him of his energy, though the system in his mind seemed to be guiding him, subtly replenishing his stamina.
What Fascinated Adam the most was how he would create two or more objects at a time, although it drained his energy and stamina, he figured he could train hard over the years and build large energy and stamina reserves.
What Adam was the most excited over was the lack of limitation on what he could shape the energy into. His options are truly limitless.
Meanwhile, in the eastern zone, Eve was making rapid progress. Her cryokinesis manifested almost naturally to her will in elegant, deadly ways: icicles forming at her command, walls of frost rising to shield her, and delicate snowflakes swirling in patterns of her design.
Seraphina, on the other hand, unleashed waves of fire with precise control, her pyrokinesis dancing in tandem with her movements.
As these two practised at the center of the zone side by side, the remaining students who had awoken elemental type ability had to give them a considerable distance to avoid getting caught up in their abilities.
This was also the same thing that was happening at the back of the elemental users zone where three Pures with the same family insignia on their Shoulders were practising their abilities. One of them had a wind ability and the other two had water abilities.
By the time the sun set, the recruits were exhausted but exhilarated at the same time. They returned to their quarters with a newfound sense of purpose and determination. On their way back, after exiting the section fourteen awakening chamber, Adam ran into Marcus, who looked frustrated despite his impressive strength-based performance. As both of them were tired, none of them made any move against the other.
The next morning, the recruits gathered in the main hall of the base. Commander Darius stood at the podium, flanked by a team of senior instructors.
"Welcome to the tenth regiment Cadets. Today, you will be assigned to classes based on your abilities and performance during the awakening. These assignments are not permanent; your progress will determine your future placement. You will train under specialized instructors who will push you to your limits."
"There are currently a total of thirty-two regiments on this Arc, each with one thousand Cadets registered. As part of Regiment 10, each of you will be assigned to a class with 100 students, which means we will have 10 classes in each regiment."
A holographic display lit up, showing a list of names under various class headings. There are a total of ten classes Adam scanned the list until he found his name.
Class seven:
Seraphina Kennedy.
Eve Reed.
Adam Reed.
Adam blinked in surprise. The idea of being in the same class as Eve was comforting enough, but to be in the same class as Seraphina? A Pure with an S-ranked ability? It was both daunting and thrilling for him.
The other names in Class 7 were a mixture of a few more S-ranked Pures, with lots of Ascendants, their ranks ranging from B5 to A5. Adam noticed Marcus had been placed in Class Three, his name listed beside other Ascendants with abilities ranked B2 and below.
Shortly after, the students gathered according to their classes and moved to the location assigned to the class.
Class Seven assembled in a specialized training hall, its walls lined with holographic panels depicting combat scenarios. Commander Darius strode in, his presence commanding immediate silence. Behind him were two women, each of them was a silver-grade commander, with the same three silver stars on their shoulders.
"Welcome to class seven," he began, his tone both stern and encouraging.
"You are here because of a randomized computer matching. You all have good potential to become strong. But potential means nothing without effort. Your training here in Aegis consists of three different fields. Combat, history and Ability. Each class is assigned three Commanders as their teachers. As many of you already know, my name is Darius Kane and for the next two years, I will be your class combat instructor. Your combat classes are held three times a week." He said, stepping backwards.
One of the women stepped forward to the podium. She was a young woman, her golden hair was an indicator of her class, an Ascendant.
"I am called Commander Selene, I will be taking you History, my classes are held once every week on Fridays. At the auditorium by the end of the hallway. I hate lateness more than ignorance. So do not be late for my class or you won't have it easy with me." she said.
When it was the other woman's turn, she strutted to the podium and stopped. Looking around the hall and gauging the students as her eyes scanned them. She paused slightly when she looked at Adam, but quickly moved her gaze to where Eve was standing.
She nodded slightly and drifted her attention towards the pures, Seraphina and the seven other pures in the class.
She herself was a Pure, and seeing the aura around the pures in the class filled her with pride.
"I am Astra. You can call me Commander Astra, I will be your Ability instructor. My classes will mostly be held alongside that of Darius, but from time to time, we will hold special classes separately." She said.
Commander Darius inched forward to the podium.
"Today, I will teach you the fundamentals of the rank system and ability dynamics. Tomorrow, I will assess each of your physical strengths without the use of your abilities"
Darius said and tapped a console, and a massive holographic chart appeared, detailing the ranking system. He started.
"Abilities are classified into seven ranks, from F to A, with each rank divided into five stages, ascending from level 5 as the lowest to level 1 as the highest. For example, a recruit with a rank B1 ability is closer to breaking into the A5 rank than someone at B5."
He paused, letting the information sink in before continuing.
"The rank of your ability determines your combat power, but mastery and creativity matter just as much. A skilled C1 combatant can defeat a careless B5. Understand your power, and push beyond your limits to make constant improvements and build your individual strength."
Darius's gaze settled on Seraphina. "An S-rank ability, such as yours, is exceedingly rare. But even you, Kennedy, must train tirelessly. Natural talent will only carry you so far. He said, now shifting his gaze to the rest of the Pures in the class"
Seraphina nodded in agreement, her facial expression serious.
He turned to Eve next. "Eve Reed, your cryokinesis is powerful, but D1 is just the beginning. With discipline and rigorous training, you can break through to C5 in no time, you could also ascend to a rank beyond C if the projection of your double awakening is true."
Finally, Darius's piercing eyes landed on Adam. "Adam, you are an enigma. Your ability, Primordial Light, has no recorded precedent. An unknown ability of unknown rank means you could have an unknown potential, but it also means you will face challenges others cannot predict. Do not squander this opportunity."
Adam nodded, his resolve hardening.
To conclude the lesson, Darius led the class to a combat arena within the training hall. "You will now witness how different ranks interact in battle," he announced.
Two military officers stepped into the arena: one wielded fire manipulation, ranked B2, while the other controlled wind, ranked C1. The duel was swift and precise, showcasing the raw power of the higher rank and the cunning tactics of the lower rank.
The rank B2 fire manipulator won, but not without sustaining a few hits from the wind user.
"Rank matters," Darius said, "but strategy and adaptability are key."
As the students left the arena, Adam felt a spark of determination. The path ahead would be gruelling, but he was ready to do whatever was necessary to become stronger.
That night, Adam reviewed his system interface. His stats had improved slightly after a day of practice, and he felt more in tune with his abilities.
He has gathered over 90 system points, however, there was no information on what they can be used for or what they represent.
Eve visited him later, her frosty aura subdued but ever-present. They had a meal together and discussed their strategy, Adam recommending that they each focus on getting the hang of using their abilities first before anything else.
"We're in this together, Adam, No matter what!" she said, her voice firm and resolute.
Adam nodded, a rare smile crossing his face.
