Society is cruel to those who appear 'different' than the rest. They shun those who do not follow the norms.
"Why couldn't you just be a normal child?! why did you have to resemble the face of that man?!"
My mother used to beat me up when I was little because I looked like the man who raped her. Yes, I was a product of a crime. The result of a man forcing himself on a defenseless woman.
"I'm sorry, mom."
My mother hated everything about me. Every time she sees my face, she is reminded of the incident that completely ruined her life. I had to put up with her abuse until I turned sixteen, where she passed away because of a car accident.
Everybody consoled and pitied me from her death, but they did not know how happy I was that she was finally gone from my life. My grandparents, after knowing that I was left all alone, took me into their household in the countryside.
They tried to raise me into a proper, well-mannered boy who, despite the immense trauma, will grow up into a normal man. However, even after leaving the city and living in a rural town, it was as if a curse always follows me wherever I go.
"Hey. Are you the new kid, the grandchild of the store owner?"
My grandmother owns a convenience store, the only convenience store in our little town. That is why she is famous, and my arrival as their only grandchild quickly became news to the townsfolk.
"Yes..."
"Good. Hey, don't be so scared of us. We just want to be friends with you."
A group of kids around my age approached me one day. They said they wanted to befriend me, so I did not think too much about it. Few weeks passed, nothing noteworthy happened. Nothing except for the fact that the kids frequently ask me about the store.
"So, hey. Don't you think your grandma is tired from watching over the shop all day? As her grandson, you should offer her your help."
I heed their advice, and soon I was tasked with watching over the store. Grandma was elated to see me being eager to help, but what she did not know was, I helped her not of my volition.
A few days after I started looking after the shop, the kids began idling around the shop, talking about all kinds of things. Unbeknownst to me, those little shits were already stealing the store's products.
I did not realize it until my grandmother questioned me about the number of missing products which did not match the store's revenue. Baffled, I confronted the kids about the stolen goods.
"What stolen goods? Did you not gave those? Hey, we are friends, right? What's a little snack going to cost you?"
"You have to stop or else my grandmother would take over the store again, and you guys cannot loiter inside it anymore."
As if understanding my situation, the kids fortunately stopped stealing. However, along with that, they also stopped interacting with me. That was fine, as long as they do not bother my grandmother.
Few months flew by and another accident befell. The store my grandmother owns was attacked by burglars. Her body was found inside, riddled with bullets and face all disfigured. The store was wrecked with nothing left inside, not even a single bag of chips.
Aggrieved and without any source of income, my grandfather decided to move to the city in hopes of getting a better life. Thankfully, luck was on my side this time, because my grandfather quickly got hired as a maintenance worker at a tech company.
With my grandfather supporting me, I got enrolled at a local university near our place. At last, I was able to live a normal life after everything I have been through. For the following six months, it was as if my curse had been lifted.
My grandfather got promoted to a supervisor position, and I was able to ace my exams, becoming the top of my class. Moreover, I also managed to get a lover, a classmate of mine whom shares the same beliefs and hobbies.
"Hey, look. Those two lovebirds are on it again."
"Leave them be. They are the smartest students in our grade."
I also made many friends, even befriending my professors whom taught me a lot. As the top student, I was also invited into several school seminars to deliver speeches which were supposed to encourage the students to become someone like me.
Even after I graduated highschool and began my college, my blessings did not seem to stop. I was offered multiple scholarships from prestigious schools, and even a grant worth five thousand dollars!
I was living the best life... but not for long. In my second year of college while I was studying for my midterms exam, I got a call from a co-worker of my grandfather.
"Hey! Come quick! Your grandfather is having a heart attack!"
I ditched the textbook that I was reading and quickly rushed towards the hospital where my grandfather was sent into.
"Doc, how is his condition?"
"I'm afraid that his heart failure has reached a very severed state. Due to fatigue from overworking himself at his age, his body began to break down. Even if we managed to treat him, I do not think he can live for long..."
The abrupt news came to me and my world crashed down. My grandfather was the only relative I have in this world, my remaining support. He was the pillar of my success, my foundation in life. I don't know what will happen to me if I also lose him.
But I did lose him.
"Clear. Shock advised. No sign of pulse. Try again."
A few days after he was rushed into the ICU, my grandfather passed away due to heart failure. Despite losing him, I did not even cry. I had no more tears to cry. Funny enough, despite having lots of friends, nobody mourned my grandfather except for me.
No classmates of mine, no co-worker of his. Not even my girlfriend came to console me. She said she had an important matter to attend to. At that point, I did not even care.
Losing my grandfather had a huge impact on my life. I could not focus on my studies, so my grades quickly went down. My five thousand dollars grant was already spent on my grandfather's medical bill.
Furthermore, I also found out that my girlfriend was cheating on me with another classmate of ours, and the reason she could not attend my grandfather's funeral was because she was with him.
After I confronted her, she only left me with the words "I'm sorry. I don't think we are right for each other."
Lost. I lost everything. My grandparents whom raised me after the horrible abused that I received from my mother, the woman whom I thought would be the one to stay with me even in thick or thin, and the joyful man whom I was once were.
"Sir, I'm sorry, but you cannot drink that without paying..."
Deranged, I went to a nearby convenience store and started drinking the alcohol in the liquor section. The staffs quickly dried to stop me, but I was out of my mind. I smashed the bottle I was drinking on a staff's head, knocking him out bloodily.
Sure enough, they called the authorities. Sirens were quickly heard as the police arrived to detain me. However, the insanity in mind had reached the level where I did not even care if what I was doing was right or not. Because of that, detaining me was no longer an option.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Three gunshots reverberated across the street. I looked in my stomach to see three holes bubbling with blood. Weak, I fell flat on the ground in a puddle of blood, my blood. Just like that my life was finally coming to an end.
"HAHAHAHAH-"
I tried to laugh, but I just coughed out more blood. I smiled in bitterness, realizing that my grandparents' hard work was all in vain. However, I also felt relieved knowing that I do not have to put up with any more shit the world wants me to have.
I felt peace, finally leaving this accursed world. Yet, I also felt hatred. I hated everyone. I hated the people who took everything from me. I hated myself for living this kind of life, for enduring it through years.
'If I could have another life, I'll make sure that it will be different. I will make sure that I will have everything!'
With that as my last thought I, Ray, having been cursed by the world, finally took my last breath and died in a convenience store.
