My girlfriend and I were on a road trip when we crashed into a billionaire's Maybach.
The billionaire got out of his car, smiled at us, and kindly asked if we were hurt. He even said we didn't need to pay for damages.
My girlfriend mistakenly thought the billionaire had fallen in love with her at first sight.
On the day I proposed to my girlfriend, she publicly rejected me and ran to the bathroom to call her best friend:
"Why do they both have the last name Morrow? Garrison is so poor, but Fintan is a billionaire!"
"The fortune teller said my soulmate's last name is Morrow. If that's the case, why can't it be the billionaire Fintan?"
"That Maybach owner is the billionaire Fintan. He must have fallen for me. I won't say yes to Garrison!"
I smirked and turned to leave.
She didn't know that the billionaire was none other than my biological father.
------
Hearing my girlfriend's phone call with her best friend, it felt like a massive stone had lodged itself in my heart, making it hard to breathe.
Reflecting on the three years I've been with Scarlett, I remember falling for her at first sight.
Back in college, I accidentally saw her applying for financial aid and realized her family wasn't well-off. To protect her pride, I lied about applying for aid myself.
After graduation, when she complained about the tough job market and high pressure, I secretly got her a position in my family's company.
I even arranged for her salary to be paid through my personal account.
To preserve Scarlett's self-esteem, I've been acting like an average guy for three years, while quietly giving her the best of everything.
Even the diamond ring I proposed with was carefully selected and personally designed by me.
But in the end, this is what I get.
The pain in my chest was unbearable, and at that moment, my phone rang.
I answered, and my dad's voice came through.
"Garrison, how'd it go? Did the proposal go smoothly?"
"Dad couldn't be there to witness your proposal, but he sent a gift for my future daughter-in-law!"
I tried to compose myself, "Dad, I'm afraid I'll have to disappoint you. The proposal... it didn't work out." The phone on the other end fell silent as Fintan was struck speechless. After a few words of comfort, he hurriedly ended the call to attend a meeting.
Scarlett had no idea that the man she kept insisting on marrying, Fintan, the wealthiest man in Ocean City, was my father.
Two months ago, when Scarlett was feeling frustrated with work, I suggested we take a road trip together.
On a deserted stretch of highway, Scarlett suddenly had the urge to drive from the driver's seat, so we swapped places.
However, not far down the road, Scarlett rear-ended a Maybach while changing lanes.
When I saw the Maybach's license plate clearly, I jokingly told Scarlett that it would cost quite a bit to fix.
Scarlett nervously got out of the car and stood next to the Maybach, looking worried.
Just as I was about to reassure her that everything would be alright, the Maybach's owner stepped out from the driver's seat.
The car owner's expression changed instantly when he saw me and Scarlett.
He kindly asked if we were hurt, and seemed relieved when we confirmed we were fine.
Scarlett timidly inquired about compensation, but the car owner just smiled and said it wasn't necessary.
Then he drove off, leaving Scarlett and me standing there on the side of the road. While waiting for the tow truck company to take away the car, I responded to messages from my dad.
Scarlett stood beside me and carefully spoke up:
"Garrison, do you know the car owner?"
"He didn't ask us for any compensation at all, even though we're at fault. We really should pay him something!"
"I looked up that car online. If we were to compensate him, we'd owe at least $100,000. I can't believe how nice he is!"
Running into my father who had just returned from overseas was unexpected. I had planned to tell my girlfriend about my identity after proposing, so I said I didn't know the car owner.
But I didn't expect my claim of not knowing him would pique my girlfriend's interest.
Scarlett felt the rear-end collision was fate connecting her to the billionaire heir, so she cast me aside without a second thought.
