At the time, I was already three months pregnant.
Asher laughed bitterly, suddenly standing up and returning to his original seat.
"You can go now. I won't accept your resignation. We'll discuss this at home tonight."
I quickly left his office. In the elevator, I let out a long sigh, feeling like I had just survived a close call.
Getting involved with Asher was my mistake.
"Ding—"
The elevator doors opened, and I looked up to meet a pair of familiar eyes.
It was Vivienne, Asher's pure love—his first love.
Vivienne didn't notice me, and I tried to hurry away.
Just as she brushed past my shoulder to enter the elevator, she called out my name.
" Kerpan?!"
I stopped in my tracks. Vivienne came around and stood in front of me.
When facing me, she always seemed to carry an air of pride.
"You're Kerpan, right!" Vivienne put her hand on my shoulder. The sudden contact made me take a step back.Vivienne sneered, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "You seem different from before, yet somehow still the same. I remember you used to always orbit around Asher!"
"What's this? Now you've gravitated to his company?"
Vivienne's eyes scanned over me, making me uncomfortable under her scrutiny. I was about to walk away when she grabbed me.
"Don't go! I'm not finished talking!"
I frowned, feeling a wave of disgust. I shook off her arm and finally mustered the courage to look her in the eye. "I'm sorry, Miss Everhart, but it's work hours. I need to get back to my job. Please don't waste my time."
Vivienne was momentarily stunned, her eyes widening in disbelief. She grabbed my arm again, twisting it.
"Are you talking to me like that?"
Her crystal nails dug into my arm, causing unbearable pain.
"You're really shameless, aren't you? You actually had Asher's child. Guess what? Now that I'm back, do you think he'll let you stay by his side?"
I looked up, meeting Vivienne's eyes directly.
At that moment, she had dropped all pretense, her gaze filled with pure hatred."Five years ago, you schemed to get pregnant with Asher's child. If it weren't for you, I'd be the one standing by his side now!"
Vivienne hissed in my ear, enunciating each word, "Now that you're back, everything you have that should be mine, I'm going to take it all back!"
I caught my breath, letting out a cold laugh. "Miss Everhart, have you considered that it might not have been my scheme at all?"
"Asher's all-powerful. Do you think I could have given birth to that child without his permission?"
Vivienne stared at me, narrowing her eyes slightly. Suddenly, she raised her hand. "What a sharp tongue you have!"
Just as I thought that slap was about to land on my face.
The elevator doors suddenly opened automatically.
I heard Vivienne call out, "Asher!"
My back stiffened, and I frantically tried to leave the scene.
"Stop right there!"
Asher called out to me. I stood with my back to both of them, taking a deep breath.
As I turned around, Asher's tall figure blocked my view. "Don't move!"
He reached out and touched my neck, wrapping a scarf around it.
"You left in such a hurry earlier, how did you forget this too?"
Just as I thought he genuinely cared about me.
