Chapter 55: Team Placement Meeting
"By the way, what's your goal, sis?" Moegi asked seriously.
Ino's gaze drifted into the distance. "Probably to become an excellent kunoichi like Lady Tsunade."
Boasting was a common trait among many ninja, with Naruto's constant "I'm going to be Hokage!" being a prime example.
It was crucial to have a goal, to let everyone around you know your ambition, whether it was reasonable or not. That's just how things were in Konoha.
Ino wanted to reach greater heights, so she needed to establish a proper and convincing persona early on, letting everyone around her, including but not limited to her parents, teachers, and friends, know her aspirations.
Tsunade was one of her few choices.
The Legendary Sannin were all excellent teachers. Orochimaru's help to Sasuke was obvious, and while Jiraiya's teaching of Naruto seemed like a sham with his "no wind chakra nature transformation, no Sage Mode, no tailed beast transformation" approach, seemingly just focusing on the basics, he actually did fill in the gaps in Naruto's shaky foundation. Without this foundation, there would be no future breakthroughs.
Tsunade also taught Sakura with all her heart. Despite being busy as Hokage, with barely any time to drink, she still made time to train the weak Sakura into a capable kunoichi.
Taijutsu, Sage Mode, Spirit Transformation Technique, medical ninjutsu - all the things Ino lacked, theoretically, could be learned from Tsunade.
Ino from the original timeline also became Tsunade's apprentice, but she didn't learn much, wasting a good opportunity. Now, Ino would tell everyone that Tsunade was her goal, so that when she sought apprenticeship later, it wouldn't seem abrupt.
Moegi nodded like a chick pecking at rice. "Mhm, I also want to follow Ino-sis's example and become an outstanding kunoichi like Lady Tsunade!"
She didn't mention that Tsunade was a relative, which made Ino a little disappointed, but it was understandable. Their relationship was probably distant, and not only would the child not know, but likely the adults wouldn't either. The Third Hokage letting her play with his grandson was probably because he considered them an ordinary ninja family, not connected to the Senju clan at all.
If their secret of being Senju descendants were exposed, Danzo would have captured them long ago. Would they have lasted until today?
This big secret should be safe.
Their relationship could be developed slowly; Ino was not in a hurry.
She tested Moegi's chakra affinity with chakra paper. As expected, the little girl's strongest affinity was also water, followed by earth, exactly the same as Ino.
Considering that Moegi would become the leader of the seventeenth Ino-Shika-Cho, Ino even suspected that the little girl might be related to her. If they weren't related, why would she be chosen to lead the next generation of Ino-Shika-Cho?
Seeing that their chakra natures were completely identical, Ino decided to invest more.
She gave Moegi a scroll of her own water chakra nature transformation training. The Mist Transformation Technique and Water Prison Technique were both provided to her by the Yamanaka clan, and even though many people knew them, she couldn't pass them on due to clan rules. Her own learning experience, however, was hers to share. She had given a copy to Sakura before, and now she gave one to Moegi.
Ino instantly rose to the status of a big sister in Moegi's heart. This training scroll was clearly more valuable than the Sexy Technique, right? She acknowledged this big sister!
"Bye sis! Come to my house to play sometime!"
"Bye Moegi, study hard!"
The week-long vacation ended quickly.
The graduating genin were about to have their team placement meeting.
At 8:30, Ino arrived at the academy.
"Did you send a shadow clone today?" Shikamaru asked listlessly.
"Of course not, I came myself. Isn't it the team placement meeting today? It wouldn't be respectful to the Jonin leader to send a clone."
The Third Hokage's son, Asuma Sarutobi, would lead their generation of Ino-Shika-Cho. Shikaku had told her this long ago.
Both professionally and personally, Ino had to come herself; it was basic courtesy.
With thirty minutes to go before the 9 o'clock meeting, she sat quietly in her seat and waited.
"Sasuke-kun?!" Sakura pushed open the door and walked into the classroom, rushing towards Sasuke the moment she entered.
Naruto, as always, stepped forward, trying to attract Sakura's attention with his clumsy antics.
Even without Ino and Sakura arguing, there were still many Sasuke fans in the class, several girls circling around Sasuke like they were competing for his favor.
Naruto was angered by Sasuke's popularity with women and jumped onto Sasuke's desk, looking down at him. Their eyes met, filled with killing intent.
Seeing Naruto challenge her Prince Charming, Sakura angrily punched Naruto. "Bastard Naruto, get away from Sasuke...ah! This, this is..."
Naruto screamed. His left arm was shattered by Sakura's punch, blood, muscle, and bone spraying like a fountain, some of it splattering onto Sakura's face and clothes.
She was completely stunned. How could this be?
Did she have that much strength? Her voice trembled. She knew she had caused a disaster but didn't know how to fix it, only mechanically repeating, "Naruto-kun, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I really didn't mean to..."
Sakura's heart was filled with anxiety. She saw Naruto glaring at her, and in an instant, his hair changed from yellow to red, his normally somewhat sleazy eyes now full of majesty.
Naruto widened his eyes and said to her word by word, "Get out!"
"Listen to my explanation, listen to my explanation..."
"Get out!"
Tears welled up in Sakura's eyes. She subconsciously looked for Ino. In her mind, perhaps Ino could solve the problem.
Ino? Thinking of this, she realized something was wrong. Where was Ino?
She looked around again, and the more she looked, the more she felt something was off. There were too many suspicious points.
Recalling the knowledge taught in class, she concluded that she must have been caught in a genjutsu.
Currently, in their class, the only person who had the means to learn genjutsu and then deliberately use it to trick her...she could only think of one person!
"Ino-pig! I won't forgive you! Aaaaaghhhhh!"
With a last shred of hope, Sakura closed her eyes and forcefully mobilized her chakra to form hand seals. "This isn't real, it's genjutsu, it must be genjutsu, release! Release! Release it!"
The world of genjutsu receded like a tide. Sakura opened her eyes and found everyone staring at her in astonishment.
She spotted Ino with a strange expression in the crowd. "Ino-pig, I'm going to kill you! Huh? What are you looking at?"
Sakura turned her head sharply and realized that when she broke free from the genjutsu, she had knocked over a desk, and on that desk stood the annoying Naruto.
The desk was knocked over, the annoying kid lost his balance, his center of gravity shifted forward, and he fell face-first into Sasuke...and stayed there.
