Chapter 66: New Mission
Ino didn't linger in front of Kabuto, and he didn't pay much attention to her either. The relationship between the two was simply that the director of the Hanada Hospital had asked Kabuto to show Ino around the hospital. The Konoha Hospital didn't have separate departments for internal medicine and surgery, and there were very few medical ninjas. Yet, the workload was heavy. Who else would they turn to but a seemingly low-qualified genin like you?
After a quick tour, Kabuto soon took his leave.
Ino was left behind to assist a few medical ninjas.
The Third Hokage had done quite well in the field of medical care. The village subsidized the hospital every year, so even ordinary villagers could seek treatment at the hospital without it being too expensive.
If you switched to a Western fantasy setting, how many priests who know divine magic would be willing to cast healing spells on commoners?
Those outside the village were beyond their concern, but the happiness index of the villagers in Konoha was actually quite high.
Many commoners were also willing to settle in Konoha.
In the following days, Ino continued to assist a chunin named Mitate. This Mitate was considered a backbone of the hospital, with superb medical skills and rich experience, though his personality was a bit too straightforward. In the original timeline, during the Chunin Exams, it was he who said that Lee could never be a ninja again.
Ino's time was limited, so she studied very diligently, seizing every opportunity to learn from controlling chakra to stimulating cell growth, bit by bit.
Medical ninjutsu was different from the five elemental techniques and clan secret techniques; it required a vast amount of knowledge. Ino had to cancel the shadow clones she used to practice water and earth release at home and bring them all to the hospital. One clone read books, another practiced chakra control, while her main body followed the medical ninjas, observing here and there, learning medical ninjutsu bit by bit.
She didn't set her expectations too high. Before apprenticing under Tsunade, she just needed to learn the basics of medical ninjutsu. Going to apprentice without knowing anything would be embarrassing.
Which doctoral advisor would be willing to teach elementary school students, starting from addition and subtraction? Tsunade had a broad mind and was willing to teach from the beginning, but that was her business. Ino felt it wasn't appropriate and decided to learn as much as she could on her own.
Medical ninjutsu was difficult to learn and master. In the original timeline, Tsunade took Sakura as her apprentice, partly because of Sakura's bond with Naruto and Sasuke, but also because Sakura was indeed suited for this path.
Ino's talent in this area was not as good as Sakura's.
Under Tsunade's guidance, Sakura took a full three months to complete the first step of medical ninjutsu initiation, which was reviving a dying fish. Without a famous teacher, Ino's progress was even slower.
In her hands, fish died one after another, with no signs of revival.
What to do with the dead fish? The Konoha Hospital wasn't a profit-making institution and couldn't provide a large number of fish for practice every day. The director of Hanada Hospital bluntly stated that their hospital had limited funds, and Ino would have to pay for these fish herself.
She bought the dead fish and then sold them to Choji. She couldn't make a profit, but at least she didn't lose money.
In Konoha, at the famous "Yakiniku Q" barbecue restaurant.
After the formation of Team 10, this place had become the base for the sixteenth generation of Ino-Shika-Cho.
Sitting in his seat, Asuma occasionally glanced at his wallet. Since leading Team 10, he found that his wallet was thinning at a visibly rapid pace.
He was the leader of Team 10, and his girlfriend, Kurenai Yuhi, led Team 8. It was only natural for the two teams to dine together.
His subordinate, Choji, had a big appetite, and Kurenai's subordinate, Hinata, had an even bigger one. Asuma, who always insisted on paying, found himself in an awkward position.
Heaven knows, if this continued, he might not have enough money to get married!
Using his girlfriend's money? Asking his father, the village head, for money? He couldn't bear the shame!
If only he could take on A-rank or S-rank missions, he wouldn't be short of money. But leading Team 10 on D-rank missions like weeding and feeding pigs, then going for barbecue... he was really running out of money.
After much thought, hearing that Team 7 had taken on another C-rank mission, he took the opportunity to ask his father, the village head, to assign a C-rank mission to Team 10. The money wasn't much, but at least it would help him recover financially, allowing him to accompany his girlfriend on dates and buy a couple of bouquets from the Yamanaka Flower Shop.
He wasn't just relying on connections. When he asked his father for a C-rank mission, he was quite confident: "Ino and Shikamaru's excellence is evident to all, and Choji's strength has grown rapidly under their influence. There's really no room for improvement with just D-rank missions. If Team 7 can take on C-rank missions alone, so can Team 10."
The Third Hokage thought for a moment. He knew his son's abilities quite well. While he couldn't compare to his three disciples, he was significantly stronger than the average jonin.
"Alright, come to my office tomorrow, and I'll see if there's a suitable mission for Team 10."
The next day, Team 10 finished their garbage collection mission early. Ino recalled all her shadow clones, and the four of them went to the Hokage Building together.
The Third Hokage picked through the missions and handed Asuma a scroll: "This is a request from the Land of Rivers. Gold was recently discovered in the Oxalis Mountain Mine. The Land of Rivers is a friendly neighbor to our Land of Fire. Recently, officials from the Land of Rivers heard that a group of ronin calling themselves the Kurotsuchi family has occupied the mine, enslaving local villagers to dig for gold.
Your mission is to investigate the matter, eliminate the ronin, rescue the villagers, and return the mine to the Land of Rivers."
Compared to problem children like Naruto and Sasuke, Ino and her team were much more normal. The Ino-Shika-Cho trio was quite reliable, being more conventional ninjas. The Third Hokage briefly explained the mission for about fifteen minutes, then waved his hand, signaling that they could proceed with the mission.
After leaving the Hokage Building, Choji asked his teammates, "Where is the Land of Rivers? Why are we handling a mission from another country?"
Shikamaru, who usually avoided trouble and found even a few extra words exhausting, had no problem explaining to his friend Choji.
He explained, "The Land of Rivers is to the west of the Land of Fire, sandwiched between us and the Land of Wind. It serves as a buffer zone between the two great nations. Since we are currently allied with the Sand Village of the Land of Wind, this request could have been given to them, but naturally, it could also be given to us."
Choji's chubby face showed a look of half-understanding, but he quickly put his doubts aside, opened a bag of chips, and happily started munching.
Ino heard that Team 7 had taken on a mission to escort an old man to the Land of Waves.
At this point, she was feeling relatively relaxed. She studied the mission scroll and map for a while, then asked Asuma, "Asuma-sensei, it seems like the Oxalis Mountain, the location of this mission, is quite close to where we and Team 7 wiped out those bandits last time, isn't it?"
