Chapter 315: Gaara and Akatsuki
"Your heart is heavy, isn't it?" The other members of the Six Paths of Pain did not show themselves; only the Deva Path, made from Yahiko's corpse, served as Pain's mouthpiece.
Gaara, carrying his large gourd, gazed out the window at the continuous light rain.
He was accustomed to the yellow sands that filled the sky of the Land of Wind. Suddenly arriving in a country so abundant with rain, he felt very out of place.
The Land of Wind had a large temperature difference between day and night. Throughout the year, for half of its 365 days, the weather was harsh, with yellow sand dancing in the air. At such times, if one went out, they had to be wrapped in several layers of clothing to protect against the wind and sand, wear a windproof and sand-proof headscarf, a long robe, and tie their trouser cuffs tightly.
But if he were to dress like that in the Land of Rain, it wouldn't take more than half an hour for him to break out in a heat rash. The Land of Wind was too dry, and the Land of Rain was too humid; neither was a good place to live.
As for whether he was sad or not?
From the Kage of a village to a rogue ninja, was he sad? Actually, he wasn't too sad.
The villagers and ninjas in that village didn't trust him. He had tried to gain more people's recognition, but that path was simply too tiring, too bitter.
Besides Temari, Kankuro, and a few others, who else was willing to trust him? So be it.
He replied very calmly, "I did my best. Whether they acknowledge me or not isn't really important."
He looked at Pain with some curiosity. "You are the leader of Akatsuki? Your eyes are?"
The distance between them was less than three meters, and these unusual eyes looked particularly conspicuous.
Pain gestured for him to sit beside him.
"These are the eyes of a sage. At least, that's what my teacher once told me."
"A sage?" This touched a blind spot in Gaara's knowledge. "What does your Akatsuki organization want to do with these eyes? Dominate the ninja world?"
Pain sneered. "Dominate the ninja world? A bit narrow-minded. Are you willing to listen to me ramble on a bit more?"
His attitude made Gaara feel a sense of friendliness. The last person who had been this friendly to him was a guy named Naruto.
"I'm a rogue ninja anyway. I don't have any annoying official duties to handle now. Feel free to talk; I'll listen."
Pain's expression was blank. "They, or perhaps including you, only see my eyes, but you never know, nor do you care, that I am not the founder of Akatsuki. The founder's name was Yahiko, and it was Yahiko who was a ninja with great ideals. Yahiko didn't hate the ninjas who killed his parents, didn't hate the five great nations. He believed that war happened because no one spread peace, no one knew how to obtain peace."
Gaara stared at him, waiting for him to continue.
"You were the Fifth Kazekage, so you must know some of Akatsuki's past, right?" Pain asked.
Gaara thought back. Konoha was unwilling to reveal specific intelligence, only saying that Akatsuki was a cancer on the ninja world. He had naturally conducted some investigations of his own.
"I know the basics, but I don't know much about your early days."
Gaara was simply too busy. Naruto only became Hokage after he was twenty, and even with the foundation Kakashi had laid and Shikamaru's assistance, he was still exhausted, leading to the saying, "Tying a dog to the Hokage's desk would do a better job than him."
Gaara was only 15 years old this year. He had no foundation from his predecessors, no capable assistant like Shikamaru, only an extremely terrible reputation. He was busy from morning to night and had no time to study the old, dusty history of Akatsuki.
Pain sighed. "Yahiko believed that Akatsuki should be an organization that spreads peace. He led us to travel among the nations. Wherever there was war, we would be there. We would step in to mediate, and if mediation failed, we would join the weaker side to turn the war into a stalemate, then slowly eliminate the conflict."
He said bluntly, "You are the Kazekage; you protected the peace of the Sand Village. Although they exiled you, I believe that some people still respect you in their hearts."
Gaara said nothing. He hadn't expected that the politicians in the Sand Village could twist black and white so much, could make things so dirty.
Pain continued, "You protect the Sand Village, Master Jiraiya protects Konoha, the Third Tsuchikage protects the Stone Village. You all fight to the death with the conviction of protection, and what is the final result? A Great Ninja War. Everyone goes to the battlefield for their homes, their villages, their wives, and their children, and fights to the death with strangers who have the same thoughts. Lord Fifth Kazekage, how do you think this deadlock can be broken?"
Gaara was speechless.
Pain spread his arms towards the window. "The narrow-minded ideology of hidden villages cannot protect the ninja world. Only Akatsuki can protect this world. When we hold absolute military power, we can become the arbitrators of conflicts, resolving them before a great war begins. Whoever starts a war, we will attack them. Then, all peace-loving ninjas will join Akatsuki and become our strength. The five great hidden villages will become a thing of the past, and war will never again appear in the ninja world."
Gaara had never received a proper education growing up. His views on life and the world had not fully formed. As a jinchuriki, he had a bit of a "might makes right" mentality; whoever could defeat him, he would listen to them.
Now, he felt that Naruto's method of seeking acknowledgment was a bit impractical.
His thoughts unconsciously began to change.
In the end, he was still too young.
He felt that what Pain said made some sense. Regarding Akatsuki's plan to collect the Tailed Beasts, Pain had also told him, and said that once a Tailed Beast leaves its jinchuriki, the jinchuriki will die.
Gaara was not afraid of death and had a spirit of sacrifice. Pain said they wouldn't drain him completely, just leave a little in the end.
After learning that Gaara had absolutely no interest in women, Pain invited him to join the "All-Male Super Team."
Before, there was a single red flower among a sea of green, Konan. Now that Konan had been captured and Gaara had joined, it was an all-male team! Perfect!
Shukaku, inside Gaara, was terrified. He could sense the aura of the Gedo Statue and the Rinnegan. He kept urging Gaara to run!
Pain couldn't possibly watch a cooked duck fly away. Shukaku was extremely violent, but in front of the Rinnegan, it was nothing. The Six Paths of Pain attacked together. They raised their black rods and beat him three times a day. Three days later, Shukaku was completely docile. Along with that, Gaara was upgraded to a perfect jinchuriki. Now, if the jinchuriki said go east, the One-Tails would absolutely not dare to go west!
Violent? In front of the Six Paths of Pain, a Tailed Beast had no right to be violent.
Nagato began to train Gaara as his successor. His own body was getting weaker, and the masked man harbored ill intentions.
To arrange a brand new future for Akatsuki, Nagato used Pain's mouth to teach Gaara all kinds of knowledge.
Gaara's aptitude was very high, but he had received little education since childhood. After becoming Kazekage, he was busy from morning to night, and his foundation was very poor.
Nagato, through Pain, gave him remedial lessons.
Ninjutsu, Kekkei Genkai, secrets of the ninja world, the forces Akatsuki secretly controlled—Nagato taught him this knowledge, bit by bit.
