Despite their recent victory, the weight of uncertainty still loomed over Lin Yuan and his team. The Covenant had suffered a critical blow, but they were far from defeated. As the news of their exposure rippled through New Omo City, the underground networks buzzed with speculation, fear, and hope. The balance of power was shifting, and in the cracks of the Covenant's shattered dominance, new threats began to emerge.
Lin Yuan sat at a makeshift desk in their safehouse, staring at the dormant Core resting in front of him. It no longer pulsed with the overwhelming energy it once held, but he could still feel its presence—silent, waiting. The Architect had fulfilled its purpose, or so it seemed.
Evelyn walked over, placing a cup of steaming tea beside him. "You're thinking too much," she said, sitting down across from him. "Enjoy the win while it lasts."
Lin Yuan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I can't shake the feeling that this isn't over." He gestured toward the Core. "The Covenant's been pushed back, but they're not gone. They'll come back, stronger."
Evelyn sipped her tea, her gaze sharp. "Then we take the fight to them before they do."
Before Lin Yuan could respond, Rei burst into the room, her eyes wide with urgency. "We've got a problem," she said, waving a data pad in front of them.
Xu Wei followed closely behind, his face pale. "Lin, I've been monitoring Covenant communications. They're not retreating… they're regrouping. And they're not alone."
Lin Yuan sat up straight. "What do you mean?"
Rei projected a holographic map onto the wall, showing multiple red markers appearing across the city. "Some of their deep operatives are rallying under a new banner. A splinter group—more radical, more desperate. They're calling themselves 'The Ascendants.' And they've got plans of their own."
Evelyn frowned. "Great. Another bunch of lunatics?"
Xu Wei shook his head. "Not just lunatics. They're former Covenant elite operatives who believe the Architect should have been weaponized. They think Lin—" he hesitated, glancing at him, "—failed. And they want the Core back to 'finish the job.'"
Lin Yuan clenched his fists. "Then we stop them. Before they can make their move."
Rei nodded. "Yeah, about that. They're already making their move."
She pulled up a live feed of security footage from across the city—black-clad operatives moving with ruthless precision, hitting key infrastructure, and gathering support from those still loyal to the Covenant. Explosions rocked power plants, financial hubs, and communications towers.
"They're destabilizing the city," Xu Wei muttered. "And if they succeed, it won't matter what we exposed. Chaos will be their cover."
Lin Yuan pushed to his feet. "Then we hit them first."
Meanwhile, in an undisclosed Covenant stronghold…
Victor Kain stood in the shadows, observing the transmission feed with an unreadable expression. Dr. Helena Voss stood beside him, her arms crossed, lips pursed in disapproval.
"The Ascendants are out of control," Helena said flatly. "They're going to ruin everything we've worked for."
Victor smirked. "On the contrary, Helena. They are exactly what we need."
Helena shot him a wary glance. "You think letting them off the leash is a good idea?"
Victor turned to her, his eyes dark with amusement. "Lin Yuan is a problem we failed to eliminate. The Ascendants, however, are true believers. They'll do whatever it takes to reclaim the Core."
Helena sighed. "And what happens when they get it? They're not exactly known for their restraint."
Victor's smile widened. "That's the beauty of it. They'll bring the Core right back to us, and by then, it will be too late for Lin Yuan to stop us."
Helena shook her head, her expression grim. "You're playing a dangerous game, Victor."
Victor's eyes gleamed. "I always do."
Back in the city…
Lin Yuan and his team moved swiftly through the ruined streets, heading toward one of the Ascendants' primary strongholds—a former Covenant black site turned rogue hideout. The air was thick with tension, and Lin Yuan's every sense was on high alert.
Evelyn scanned the perimeter with her rifle. "Two guards at the entrance, likely more inside."
Lin Yuan nodded. "We go silent, take them down, and get what we need."
Rei tapped into the building's security system, disabling cameras and motion detectors. "You're clear to move in. But if they catch wind of us, we're screwed."
Lin Yuan smirked. "They won't."
In a blur of motion, he slipped through the shadows, taking down the first guard with a swift, silent strike. Evelyn followed, neutralizing the second guard before he could react.
Once inside, they found themselves in a dimly lit corridor, the walls lined with old Covenant insignia now defaced with the Ascendants' symbol—an ominous black hand gripping a flaming core.
"They're really leaning into the cult vibes," Rei muttered through the comms.
Lin Yuan ignored the comment and pressed forward. At the end of the corridor, they found a control room filled with monitors displaying strategic points across the city—Ascendant attacks in progress, targets yet to be hit, and detailed plans for something called "Phase Zero."
Xu Wei's voice crackled in. "Lin… Phase Zero is their endgame. They're planning to unleash an EMP wave across the entire city, wiping out critical infrastructure and plunging New Omo into total darkness."
Lin Yuan's jaw tightened. "We can't let that happen. Rei, copy the data. Evelyn, set charges on the power grid."
Evelyn nodded, planting small explosive charges on the main power conduits. "Two minutes, and this place is dust."
Suddenly, an alarm blared, red lights flashing across the room. The Ascendants had detected their presence.
"We're out of time!" Rei shouted.
Lin Yuan grabbed the drive with the copied data and shouted, "Move!"
Gunfire erupted behind them as Ascendant operatives poured into the corridor, their weapons blazing. Evelyn covered their retreat with precise shots, while Lin Yuan led the charge through the chaos.
As they burst out of the building, the charges detonated behind them, sending flames and debris skyward.
Rei exhaled, catching her breath. "Well, that escalated."
Lin Yuan didn't smile. He stared at the smoldering remains of the stronghold, his mind already racing toward the next battle.
"We need to stop Phase Zero before it's too late," he said grimly. "This isn't just about the Core anymore… it's about saving the entire city."
Evelyn placed a hand on his shoulder. "Then let's finish this."
Lin Yuan nodded, determination burning in his eyes.
