Maya woke up the next morning with the kind of clarity she hadn't felt in months. The previous night had been a revelation—a moment of reckoning. Vic's betrayal stung, but instead of letting the pain consume her, she made a decision: it was time to move on. Not just from him, but from the person she had become because of him. She wasn't going to be the girl who waited around, begging for someone's approval anymore.
She was going to reclaim her power, her confidence. And if Vic thought he could just walk away from her without a second thought, he was sorely mistaken.
Maya stood in front of her mirror, brushing through her hair, her heart racing with excitement. She could almost feel the shift inside her—like a fire had been lit under her. No more hiding behind her insecurities. No more catering to Vic's needs. Today was the start of something new.
At school, Maya felt like a different person. She walked through the halls with purpose, her head held high. She smiled at people she didn't usually acknowledge, laughed a little louder, and stood a little taller. She had always been confident, sure, but there had always been a part of her that held back for Vic—the part that cared what he thought. That was gone now. Today, Maya was playing by her own rules.
She made a beeline for the cafeteria, but before she even stepped foot inside, she spotted him—Vic, sitting with his usual group of friends. He glanced up as she entered, his eyes locking with hers. Maya felt a surge of adrenaline, but instead of feeling the usual pang of longing, she felt something stronger—determination.
She didn't need him. She didn't need anyone.
Luna, Maya's best friend, was already sitting at their usual spot, and she couldn't help but notice the change in Maya's demeanor.
"Look at you," Luna grinned. "You're glowing. What happened?"
Maya shrugged, feigning nonchalance. "I just realized I'm better off without him. I'm done being the girl who waits for Vic's validation."
Luna raised an eyebrow. "So what now? You're not just going to sit around moping, are you?"
Maya grinned, feeling a rush of confidence that made her giddy. "Oh, no. I'm going to show him exactly what he's missing."
Luna laughed. "Love the attitude! But how are you going to do that?"
Maya's eyes sparkled. "Oh, you'll see. I'm done chasing anyone. From now on, the boys are going to chase me."
For the rest of the day, Maya played her newfound confidence to perfection. She flitted between classes with a sense of purpose, making sure every guy she passed noticed her. She greeted the jocks in the hallway with a wink, tossed her hair as she brushed past the cute boy in science class, and even gave a flirty smile to Mr. Harris, the charming history teacher.
By the time the bell rang for lunch, Maya had caught the attention of practically every guy at Crestwood High. And with every second of attention, her self-assurance grew.
Luna watched, wide-eyed, as Maya effortlessly charmed the boys around her. "You're really going for it, huh?"
Maya laughed, flicking a lock of hair over her shoulder. "I'm done being the one to chase. Let them come to me."
Luna shook her head in awe. "You've got this in the bag, Maya. Watch out, Vic."
At lunch, the scene was set. Maya, Luna, and their friends sat at their usual table, but the dynamic had changed. The boys who usually sat at the far end of the cafeteria had shifted, making their way over to Maya's table. They wanted her attention, and Maya was more than happy to give it to them.
One of the boys, Cole, a tall and athletic senior with dark brown hair, took a seat next to her. "Hey, Maya. You looking good today," he said with a grin.
Maya raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Thanks, Cole. You're not looking too bad yourself." She flashed him a flirtatious smile, feeling the rush of power. She had always held back around guys like him, unsure of herself, afraid of rejection. But now, she reveled in the attention.
Cole leaned in a little closer, his tone low and teasing. "You know, I've been thinking about asking you out for a while. You've always been the one that got away, Maya."
Maya laughed softly, not in the least bit nervous. "Is that so?" she asked, tilting her head. "Well, I'm not exactly the one who's hard to catch, am I?"
Cole smirked, clearly intrigued. "Maybe not. But what about Vic? I thought you two were inseparable."
Her smile faltered for just a second before she quickly regained her composure. "Vic?" she said, scoffing lightly. "He's in the past now. He's just another guy who couldn't see what he had until it was too late."
Cole grinned, clearly impressed. "I like this new attitude, Maya. You're not playing around."
Maya leaned back, savoring the power she felt. "I'm not. Not anymore."
Luna watched Maya work her magic from across the table, her mouth hanging open. "Damn, girl. You've got them eating out of your hand."
Maya gave her a wink. "They like what they see, I guess."
Just as Maya turned back to Cole, she noticed Ethan, the soccer captain, glancing over from the snack bar. She caught his eye and immediately felt the familiar rush of confidence. She winked at him, making sure her gaze lingered just long enough to catch his attention.
Ethan quickly made his way over to the table. "Hey, Maya," he said, a little breathless. "I… I couldn't help but notice you from across the room."
Maya flashed him a smile. "What's up, Ethan? You couldn't resist coming over, huh?"
Ethan's eyes widened slightly. "I've always thought you were really something, you know. Just never had the guts to say it."
Maya tilted her head, feigning innocence. "Well, I'm glad you finally worked up the courage. It's about time."
She leaned in slightly, her voice low and teasing. "But, just so you know, I'm not the type of girl who waits around for someone to notice her."
Ethan was speechless, and Maya reveled in it.
Later, after school, Maya walked out of the building, the buzz of victory still vibrating through her veins. She had flirted with the boys, captured their attention, and felt more alive than she had in ages. It felt so good to be desired, to be wanted. But it felt even better to know that she was the one in control now.
As she made her way to her car, Luna caught up with her, a huge grin on her face. "That was insane. You really had them wrapped around your finger today."
Maya laughed, twirling the keys in her hand. "I told you. This is just the beginning."
Luna raised an eyebrow. "What's next?"
Maya glanced over at her, her eyes gleaming with newfound confidence. "Next? I'm going to show Vic just how much he lost. He thought he could walk away from me? Fine. I'm walking away from him, too. And when he comes crawling back, he'll realize that the girl he thought he could have any time? She's gone."
Luna grinned. "I love this new version of you."
Maya smiled, feeling invincible. "I'm done chasing. I'm done waiting. From now on, they'll be chasing me."
As the wind ruffled her hair, Maya knew she had made the right choice. This was her time now. And nothing was going to hold her back.
