The air in the labyrinth grew colder with every step. Walls of smooth obsidian glistened like mirrors, reflecting faint glimpses of Kaelena and Eren as they pressed forward. Each turn seemed deliberate, designed to disorient and unsettle.
"This place is alive," Kaelena muttered, her hand resting on the hilt of her blade. "I've heard rumors about the trials in here. It adjusts to your abilities, always staying one step ahead."
"Perfect," Eren said dryly, his eyes scanning for movement. "Because fighting something smarter than us is exactly what I wanted to do today."
Kaelena smirked but didn't respond. The faint hum of energy crackled in the distance, growing louder as they rounded another corner. Ahead, a wide chamber opened up, its floor etched with glowing runes that pulsed in hypnotic patterns.
"This feels like a trap," Eren said, stepping cautiously to the edge of the room.
"It is a trap," Kaelena replied. "The question is how to survive it."
As if responding to her words, the runes flared, and the ground trembled. From the walls emerged six crystalline constructs, each one humanoid in shape but devoid of any features. Their bodies radiated light, and jagged limbs glittered like blades.
[System Alert: Hostiles Detected – Crystalline Sentinels.]
Eren's heart pounded as the System chimed in, offering no advice. The constructs moved with eerie coordination, spreading out to encircle them.
"Stay close," Kaelena barked, unsheathing her blade. It shimmered with a fiery glow as she lunged at the nearest sentinel, slicing clean through its torso. The construct shattered into fragments of light, but another immediately moved to take its place.
"Great," Eren muttered, dodging a swipe aimed at his head. "Regenerating enemies. My favorite."
Energy crackled around his fingers as he fired a bolt of light at the closest construct. The impact left a scorch mark, but the sentinel barely faltered. He gritted his teeth and fired again, this time aiming for its joints. The attack hit home, severing the creature's arm and causing it to stagger.
"Go for the joints!" he shouted to Kaelena.
"Got it," she replied, her blade carving precise arcs as she targeted the constructs with newfound efficiency.
But as they fought, the runes on the floor began to shift, their light converging into a central point. The ground quaked violently, and a new figure emerged from the center of the room—a towering construct twice the size of the others, its form covered in jagged crystals that radiated heat.
"That's new," Eren said, his voice tight.
The massive construct let out a deafening roar, and molten shards rained down from its body, forcing them to scatter.
"We need a plan!" Kaelena shouted, narrowly avoiding a barrage of shards. "This thing's not going down like the others."
Eren's mind raced. The smaller constructs were manageable, but this new one was in a different league. He glanced at his system interface, the number of points still taunting him.
[System Points: 210]
He hesitated for only a moment before accessing the shop again. If there was ever a time to gamble, it was now.
"Flash Step," he muttered, selecting the ability. The points deducted instantly, and a surge of energy coursed through him.
[Flash Step Unlocked – Enhance mobility with bursts of speed.]
Kaelena noticed the change immediately. "What did you do?" she asked, sidestepping another attack.
"Something risky," he replied. "Just cover me."
Without waiting for her response, he activated Flash Step. The world around him blurred as he moved with blinding speed, reappearing behind the massive construct before it could react. He struck its exposed back, sending a wave of energy through its core. Cracks spread across its crystalline body, but it wasn't enough to finish it off.
The construct roared in fury, spinning around to retaliate. Eren barely dodged its massive arm, the heat of its shards singing his jacket. He activated Flash Step again, repositioning himself near Kaelena.
"Nice trick," she said, her eyes narrowing as she assessed the construct's weakened state. "But we need to hit it harder."
She held out her free hand, and a ball of swirling fire formed in her palm. "I'll distract it. You aim for the core."
Eren nodded, his breathing heavy but determined. As Kaelena launched the fireball, drawing the construct's attention, he activated Flash Step one final time, appearing directly in front of the creature. Channeling every ounce of energy he had, he fired a concentrated blast at the glowing core in its chest.
The construct froze, its body trembling as fractures spread across its surface. With a deafening crack, it shattered into a thousand pieces, the light from its core dissipating into the air.
The room fell silent, save for their labored breathing. The runes on the floor dimmed, and a door at the far end of the chamber slid open.
"Well," Kaelena said, sheathing her blade. "That was fun."
Eren shot her a tired look. "Your definition of fun is broken."
