Chapter 7: Weird Cousin

The glass suddenly shattered. "Demon, let her go!"

Bevis's sharp voice rang out. Dressed in his police uniform, he exuded a heroic and resolute aura, like a sudden burst of sunlight piercing through the darkness, dispelling the bloodthirsty gloom in the entire restaurant. He raised his gun, aiming it cautiously at the vampire pinning me down.

"Bevis! Save me—" He was truly my lifeline—my savior. My frightened heart calmed down.

"You ran quite fast, from the west to the east of Avion in just ten minutes!" The vampire holding me down opened his blood-red eyes, sizing up Bevis. In the blink of an eye, he had moved right in front of him.

Only the sound of intense bangs... The bullets passed through his body without leaving any wounds, but the gun was suddenly crushed, accompanied by a cold sneer, "You think you can challenge me with this toy gun?"

"I'll make your death look good!" Bevis moved with incredible speed, deftly dodging the attack of the vampire's claws, and leaped over to the bar. I had never seen him use these moves before—his leap was even cooler than in the movies!

He pulled his jacket over me, covering my body. "Margie, how on earth did you provoke him?" he complained, grabbing a bottle of strong liquor and a lighter, then pulling me toward the kitchen.

I tightened the police jacket around me. "He barged in first, I was already being polite... Your moves earlier were amazing!"

"He's over a thousand years old, an ancient vampire. If you don't provoke him, he'll never reveal his true nature!"

Strange, how does Bevis know so much?!

"You should've taught me about vampires instead of always being tied up with your damn cases and never coming home!"

"I'm sorry, I came back late. Are you hurt?" he asked with concern, his handsome, pale face looking travel-worn, as if he had walked a long distance. His shirt collar was soaked with sweat.

"No!"

I hadn't heard the sound of a car earlier. Could it be... he ran back?

That vampire said he "ran from the west to the east of Avion in just ten minutes," which was ridiculously exaggerated. "Bevis, where did you come back from?"

He slammed the kitchen door shut. "It was indeed the west! Recently, vampire attacks have been frequent. I didn't expect them to come here too!" He grabbed a cloth, stuffed it into the bottle's mouth, and lit it with the lighter. Before the vampire could crash into the door, he opened it with an eerie speed, threw the bottle at the baron, and quickly closed it, pressing against the door with all his might.

"Bevis, you're so fast!" I couldn't help but exclaim.

"After my 26th birthday, I realized I could move this fast!"

"Why am I only finding out now?"

"Because I've been too busy to show you!" He shrugged, and together we peered through the door glass to observe the situation outside.

Something eerie happened again—outside, there was no fire, and even the vampire had disappeared.

I couldn't help but ask, "Bevis, are you sure you threw the bottle out just now?"

"Hey! Don't waste the alcohol like that. Burning down the restaurant would be such a shame!"

That low, cold voice slowly sounded from behind.

We turned around in panic. The burning cloth on the bottle had been extinguished by a powerful gust. He casually tore off the charred cloth and took a couple of gulps of the liquor. "This wine is pretty bad, tastes weird!"

Bevis quickly pulled me behind him, whispering urgently, "Margie, listen to my command, take deep breaths, concentrate... try to agitate the blood in his body!"

"Will it work?"

"Racing him is definitely not wise. Making his blood explode is the best way. Focus, and you can do it!"

What was I thinking? I'm such an idiot!

"Wait!" the vampire suddenly spoke. As soon as the words fell, he was only two centimeters away from Bevis. A powerful force suddenly struck, and everything went dark before my eyes.
