Chapter 4: Into The Shadows

James took a seat at a rusted table as the wind howled through the empty corridors of an old military base, the folder with the damning evidence laid out on the table before him. Colonel Usman had done little more than leave him with a dozen unanswered questions, but one thing was sure: the community of corruption he had stumbled upon was deeper than he had ever imagined. And each new piece of information feels like another load weighing him down.

Victor Kareem had been a well-regarded general before he found himself at the center of an illegal arms network that went far beyond the military barracks. But what surprised James the most was the dawning realization that it had not been a mere accident his fall from grace had been a planned thing. He had been silenced for being too near the truth. The army he had fought for, the country he had sworn to protect, had turned against him.

He ran a hand through his hair and tried to steady his breathing. What now? How was he ever going to take on a man like Kareem? A man with power, influence, and resources far more than James had ever dreamed possible.

"You're thinking too much, soldier," Usman's voice suddenly brought him back to the present.

James shot up at the sound of the Colonel standing in the doorway, his expression serious. "You should've gone home, Usman. This is not your fight anymore."

Usman chuckled softly. "I haven't been able to go home since years, James. This fight is personal now. You're not the only one that they've done that to."

James nodded, knowing more than he wished he did. And he knew the whispers of the Colonel's past the career that had fallen to pieces due to a few bad decisions, the political maneuvering that had taken him all the way down but he'd yet to know about the full extent of it. And Usman was as much a ghost fighting this war as James was.

"So what's the plan?" James asked, his voice rough.

"We need to know more information. And we need to be careful. Kareem's no longer just a soldier. He's a kingpin in a global network, and he has eyes everywhere.'" Usman's face darkened. "I know people. People who can help us. But we'll need to be quick. The more time we lose, the more risk we take."

James clenched his fists. "I didn't come this far to play games, Usman. I don't really need to know what the hell happened to me. I need to take Kareem down. If we don't, nothing changes. And there's no going back."

Usman eyed him for a long moment and his gaze betrayed a flicker of doubt. "Okay, but you need to understand something. We're not fighting a man. "We're up against a whole system." People will die. And the closer you come to the truth, the more people will try to stop you."

James's jaw tightened. "I have lost everything already. What's left to lose?"

Usman sighed, his face softening for the first time. "You have more than you think you have. You're not alone in this. Not everyone who wants Kareem brought down is so venal. But we have to be smart. No more mistakes. We can't afford to trust anyone.

James's mind was swirling with thoughts, but what Usman had said had resonated. For the first time in many tag days, the flicker of determination stirred him. The battle he had been avoiding had come for him once again, and this time, he was not backing down.

"I will do what it takes," James said, rising from his place at the table, his eyes flashing with determination.

Usman gave him a sharp nod. "Good. Now let's get to work."

They prepared in the hours that followed. Usman reached out to trusted allies a few former operators, others intelligence contacts who had their own motivation in taking Karim down. James, for his part, sifted through reams of documents, piecing together the connections between Kareem's dealings, his associates and the web of corruption that stretched between continents.

With the sun setting and illuminating the old base with an eerie glow, James and Usman completed the plan. It wasn't perfect, but it was the best they could manage. They would infiltrate one of Kareem's operations an arms deal set to go down in a remote area of the country. It would be risky, but it was their best chance at obtaining the evidence they required.

"We leave at dawn," Usman said, his voice low. "We have to strike them hard and fast before they know what hit them."

James felt the adrenaline starting to pump through his veins and nodded. For the first time since his discharge, he felt the familiar thrill of a mission. This was what he was born to do fight for something larger than himself.

He didn't know how it would end, but one thing was clear: He was going to make certain that Kareem would not get off.

Just as the two men readied to leave the base, James's phone buzzed in his pocket. He took it out, half expecting it to be Usman with a last-minute update. But his heart raced when he saw the name on the screen.

It was Sarah.

For a brief moment, the gravity of his situation hit him. Dragging her into this world of darkness and danger was the last thing he wanted to do, after all. But he couldn't overlook that she had given him something no one had in a long time: hope.

He answered the call. "Sarah?"

Her voice was low, but there was a definite edge to it. "James, I need your help. Something's happened. They're coming for me."

James's blood ran cold. "Who's coming for you?"

"The people you're after," Sarah said, her voice cracking. There is also an informant running around here. They know what I know."

Fear washed over James like a tsunami. He knew what he needed to do, but the consequences were higher than ever this time. Sarah was now a target and it was his fault. He had to protect her.

"Stay where you are. I'm coming there right now," James said, his voice tense.

But as he ended the call, Usman's voice cut through. "What's going on?"

James turned to him, his face hard. "We're not just hunting Kareem anymore. We're going after all of the people who are involved in this. And I'm going to protect Sarah."

Usman didn't argue. He just nodded grimly. "Let's move, then. No time to waste."

And with that they turned into the night, the

storm that had been brewing for so long finally crashing over them
