The Broker watched in silence from the corner of the darkened room, his hands tightly bound to the chair with coarse ropes. The safe house was silent, broken only by the buzzing of Lina's laptop and the crackling of the worn wood-burning stove. Breathe in the atmosphere of tension, not yet lifting but heavy with the burden of their assignment. But with this victory the team also knew this was far from over in the war against the syndicate.
James walked back and forth, his mind racing as he put together the pieces of information they had gotten out of the Broker. Lina was poking through the files, cross-referencing names and operations. Hassan wiped down his rifle in silence, glancing occasionally at their prisoner. Sarah sat by the window, her sniper rifle propped against the wall next to her. "Talk," James said, ending the silence. He looked toward the Broker, who had been maddeningly calm since their capture. "You know how this ends. You either aid us in taking down the syndicate or you go down with it.'
A brow arched, a small smirk with biting edges alive on the Broker's lips. "You think I'm afraid of death, Mr. Brown. I've gone about my life assuming it could end at any second. The syndicate had trained me well. They'll replace me before you know what's happening."
James moved forward, his voice low, dangerous. "And you're not just some cog in the machine. You're a key piece. "We have enough to rip apart the network, but someone has to guide us through the cracks the places that only you know."
The Broker leaned back, their smirk slipping for the first time. "Even if I wanted to help you, and I don't, it won't matter. There are others, more powerful, more dangerous than I. You think you've won by taking me here? You've just stirred the beast."
Lina's voice sliced through the tension. "James, I've got something." She turned her laptop around so it faced the team. "There is a hidden network in the syndicate something the Broker did not mention. It's called Erebus. Looks like it's their backup plan, a sort of shadow network intended to keep them alive if their primary ones are destroyed."
The Broker's face darkened, and James recognized he had hit a nerve with Lina.
"Erebus?" James asked, his tone sharp. "What is it?"
The Broker paused, and gave a sigh. "Erebus is the fallback plan for the syndicate. It's a secure network of operatives, safe houses and resources worldwide. Erebus' survival relies on this if the main organization falls. "You'll never find it's meant to be invisible.
Hassan scoffed. "Invisible? You mean like you were? Look where that got you."
Sarah stood and faced the Broker. "You're going to tell us all about Erebus locations, contacts, operations. Or we'll let the syndicate know you've betrayed them."
The Broker's eyes grew a tad wider, the slightest glimmer of fear passing over their face. "You wouldn't."
Sarah leaned in, speaking as if the other one couldn't hear: "Try me."
The team spent several hours interviewing the Broker, gleaning bits of information about Erebus from it. Lina slowly started putting the pieces together, creating a web of locations and connections. It hasn't been an easy task, but they were finding their way.
"We may have something. There's a central access point for Erebus in Istanbul. It's secure, but if we can get in, we might be able to take down their entire network. James replied: "Then that's the plan. But we can't wait for long. The syndicate will not keep quiet for much longer." Hassan looked at the Broker. "What should we do with them." James replied: "Take them with us. If they escalate, it's over." The Broker laughed: "You are going to your deaths. Erebus is not just a network. It's a fortress. You will never get out." James gazed back at them. "We've had the same warning distributed to us several times. And yet, here we are." The chapter ends with the team boarding a flight to Istanbul, with the Broker in the cargo bay, prepared for what may be their final mission. The tension is thick, with the distinction between success and failure being blurred, and the prominence of the syndicate's shadows feels bigger than ever.
