The chase ended as the walls rattled with the lockdown sequence, sealing James and his crew inside the archive vault. Red emergency lights hugged the edges of the room, throwing shadows over top of files and computer terminals. The voice, flat and mechanical, repeated the warning:
"Unauthorized access detected. Security lockdown initiated."
Then came the calm, controlled voice of the Architect over the loudspeakers, laced with amusement.
"Welcome, James. To tell the truth, I commend your tenacity. But breaking into my vault? That was a mistake."
James's jaw clenched. The team had blundered right into a trap.
Lina's fingers danced across her keyboard. "I'm attempting to override the system but the firewall is too strong.
Sarah looked around the walls seeking a weakness. "There's got to be a better way out."
The Broker remained restrained, but you could tell he was having a good time, leaning back against the desk. "Oh, there is. But it won't be easy."
Hassan faced them, rifle aloft. "Start talking."
The Broker smirked. "The Architect does not take lives in a hurry. They like to play first. You're in their web now."
James ignored the taunts. He returned to the loudspeaker. "What do you want?"
The Architect chuckled. "Isn't it obvious? I have been watching you for years, James. Tracking your every move. You used to be interesting to me."
James's grip tightened on his pistol. "I'm not here to play games."
"But here's the thing," the Architect said. "You've already been playing. You just never knew it."
A hidden panel opened on the far side of the room, and a screen emerged. Now the Architect's voice issued from there, louder. "Do you want to see how deep this goes?"
The image crackled to life, showing grainy surveillance footage. James felt his stomach drop at what was written on it.
His past missions. His home. Sarah's family. Hassan's military records. Lina's movements over the past five years.
The Architect had been watching his every move.
Sarah stepped up, her tone fast. "We what?" "How long have you been watching us?
The Architect sighed. "For some of you, years. For others? A lifetime."
The screen flickered once more this time showing an old military briefing. James saw a younger version of himself before him, snapping to at attention as a general spoke. But this camera angle was not from the usual recordings. This was hidden. Secret.
Then another video Sarah as a little girl, walking hand in hand with her father, a high-ranking intelligence officer. It was old footage, but there was no mistake.
And then Hassan, during a mission, photographed from afar.
Lina, years ago at a computer lab at a university, blissfully unaware of being monitored by a camera.
James's throat went dry. "Why?"
The voice of the Architect softened. "Because you are dangerous."
James clenched his fists. "And what does that make you?"
A low chuckle. "The person on the board."
The room suddenly changed direction the floor panel under the team slid free and exposed pressure plates.
Lina's screen flashed. New instructions: Disable the sequence or die.
The voice of the Architect returned, colder this time. "Let's see if you can think on your feet, James.
The Countdown Begins
Lina's eyes scanned the data feed. "It's a puzzle. A timed encryption lock. If I don't get it cracked in " she glanced at the screen, her expression going pale, "three minutes, the whole vault seals for good."
James turned to her. "Can you do it?"
Lina's hands were in motion already. "I have to."
Sarah and Hassan stood near the doors in a defensive stance. If the Architect was playing a trap, there was no way they weren't sending guards to clean up.
Sarah kept her rifle steady. "Hassan, do you hear that?"
Hassan frowned, listening. Then he cursed. "Footsteps. We've got incoming."
James turned to the Broker. "Are you enjoying this?"
The Broker's smirk had faded. "I had no idea it would be this paranoid." The Architect is not just a threat eliminator. They erase them."
Lina's fingers moved faster. "One minute left!"
The first line of guards emerged in the hall. Hassan and Sarah began shooting, the bullets ricocheting off the thick walls. James picked up a fallen guard's rifle and took part.
The Architect's voice returned, highly amused. "Fighting isn't going to save you, James. You've already lost."
James gritted his teeth. "We'll see about that."
Lina's screen beeped. "I GOT IT!"
The countdown froze at 00:06.
The doors unlocked. The lockdown was lifted.
James didn't hesitate. "MOVE!"
The team rushed out of the vault, dodging incoming guards. The Broker jogged behind them, hands still tied. "You really do know how to make an exit."
They made their way to the emergency stairwell, but an explosion shook the building. Smoke billowed as the Architect's last failsafe was triggered.
James turned to Lina. "Tell me you got the data."
She held up her drive. "Every file. Every secret."
James's gaze hardened. "Then we're finishing this."
The Architect was not invulnerable.
But James had just become the one person they couldn't get in line.
