Chapter 26:The Shadow War

The tension hung heavy in the air as James and his men left? Each step had felt like a gamble, their backs unprotected to the Syndicate's forces. But the Architect had decreed that for now they were free to go.

Colonel David Wren stepped next to James, his expression inscrutable. Rooftop snipers kept their weapons aimed at the enemy until the last second before retreating into the darkness and seeming like they'd never existed.

Lina clutched the hard drive as though it were her last lifeline. Sarah and Hassan remained together, their weapons drawn. The Broker now unbound but still heavily monitored straightened his suit with a smirk as if he had just seen the show of his life."

As soon as they hit their getaway vehicles, James let out a breath. They had made it out.

But it wasn't over. Not even close.

Regrouping at the Safehouse

The safehouse was a converted warehouse on the city's outskirts, a place only a small number of trusted contacts knew of. Right as they walked in, Lina Jetter began hurriedly setting up her laptop, plugging in the hard drive.

"We have to get the files out immediately," she said, urgency echoing through her voice. "The Syndicate will hunt us down."

Hassan locked the doors and strengthened the barricades while Sarah kept watch.

James glanced at Wren, who had followed them in uninvited.

"Speak," James said, crossing his arms. "Why the hell are you here?"

Wren was leaning against a crate with her arms crossed. "You're making a whole lot of enemies, James. I thought you could use an ally."

James wasn't buying it. "You don't do favors."

Wren smirked. "Maybe I just like to see the Syndicate sweat."

Sarah looked over at James, a wary glance. "We barely made it out alive. Why did the Architect pull back?"

Wren's smirk faded. "Because they weren't expecting you to have help." He pointed to the snipers who had helped them escape. "You're not the only ones who want the Syndicate to fall. But you also just made yourself the greatest threat they've ever faced.'"

Lina glanced up from her laptop. "We don't have much time. The files are deeply encrypted, and I'm over here picking out tracking tails they've buried inside them. The instant I break out, they'll know right where we're at."

James nodded. "Then we act before that comes to pass."

Sarah sighed. "Where?"

James turned to Wren. "You said we weren't the only people after the Syndicate. Who else is in the fight?"

Wren's face grew serious. "There's a faction within the government that wants them out. A collection of people who have been waiting for the right moment to pounce."

The Broker chuckled. "Oh, the classic 'secret resistance. Let me guess, they want our files?"

Wren ignored him. "They need proof. Something undeniable. And that drive? That's the key."

James thought, running a hand through his hair. Handing over the files, they would be wagering everything on people they didn't even know. But if they didn't, they'd be up against the Syndicate alone.

A notification popped up on Lina's laptop. She gasped. "I cracked the first layer."

All eyes were glued to the screen. Reams of classified information rushed to hand names, bank transactions, secret operations.

Then, a chilling discovery.

A list of targets.

And James's name was on it. So was Sarah's. Hassan's. Even Lina's.

The Syndicate had intended to kill them all.

James clenched his fists. "We need to hit them first."

Wren nodded. "Then it's time we took this battle to the next level."

The struggle wasn't merely one of survival anymore.

It was about destroying the Syndicate forever.
