(Sapphire's POV)
The party dragged on, and Sapphire barely registered any of it. The music swelled and ebbed; laughter echoed across the grand ballroom, but she was trapped in her own mind, replaying every moment of the night like a broken record.
Celeste's words, Amara's hesitation, Ivy's unwavering support—they all clawed at her from different directions, each demanding her attention, each pulling at threads she had worked so hard to weave together into the perfect image.
She retreated further into herself, her polished smile faltering only when she was certain no one was looking. From the corner of her eye, she could see the jealous stares of her female classmates, the admiring glances of the boys who lingered nearby, too intimidated to approach. This was the life she had chosen, the life she had crafted for herself, and yet, for the first time, it felt hollow.
"Another drink, miss?" a waiter asked, interrupting her spiraling thoughts.
Sapphire glanced at the champagne flute on the tray and nodded, taking it without a word. She sipped it slowly, letting the bubbly liquid numb her tongue and the edges of her unease.
"You think you're untouchable, but you're not."
Celeste's voice echoed in her mind, and Sapphire's grip on the glass tightened. She hated how those words had wormed their way under her skin, how they had forced her to confront something she didn't want to face.
Weakness.
She had spent years erasing every trace of it, building herself into someone who could never be hurt, never be betrayed. Yet, here she was, standing in a room full of people who idolized and envied her, feeling more exposed than she ever had.
A soft laugh brought her attention back to the present. Across the room, Celeste was chatting with a small group of students, her charm on full display. Her dark eyes glinted as she gestured animatedly, and the group around her hung on her every word.
Sapphire's chest tightened. How could someone so infuriating, so dangerous, also be so captivating? It wasn't fair.
She turned away, focusing on anything else—anyone else. But her gaze landed on Amara, who stood by the refreshment table, sipping from a wine glass and watching her with an unreadable expression.
Sapphire's heart skipped a beat. The sadness in Amara's eyes from earlier lingered, and it hit Sapphire like a punch to the gut.
She forced herself to look away, her hands trembling as she set her glass down on a nearby table. She needed to leave. She needed air.
Without a word, she slipped through the crowd, ignoring the curious looks and whispered remarks that followed in her wake.
---
The gardens were quiet, the soft chirping of crickets the only sound as Sapphire wandered down a winding path lined with roses. The cool night air brushed against her skin, but it did little to calm her racing thoughts.
She stopped by a small fountain, the gentle trickle of water soothing in its simplicity. Taking a deep breath, she leaned against the stone edge, closing her eyes and letting the world fall away.
But the peace didn't last.
"Running again?"
Her eyes snapped open, and she whirled around to see Celeste standing a few feet away, her arms crossed and a knowing smirk on her lips.
"What do you want?" Sapphire demanded, her voice sharper than she intended.
Celeste shrugged, taking a step closer. "I was just curious. You've been acting strange all night. It's not like you to show cracks in the perfect Sapphire veneer."
Sapphire clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. "If you're here to gloat, don't waste your breath. I'm not in the mood."
Celeste raised an eyebrow. "Who said anything about gloating? I'm genuinely concerned."
"Concerned?" Sapphire let out a bitter laugh. "Don't pretend to care, Celeste. It doesn't suit you."
Celeste's smirk faded, and for a moment, something raw flickered in her eyes. "You're wrong," she said quietly. "I do care."
The sincerity in her voice caught Sapphire off guard, and she faltered, unsure of how to respond.
Celeste took another step closer, her expression softening. "You don't have to pretend with me, Sapphire. I see through the act, remember? You don't have to be perfect all the time."
Sapphire's chest tightened, her carefully constructed walls trembling under the weight of Celeste's words. "You don't know anything about me," she whispered, though the words felt hollow even as she said them.
"I know more than you think," Celeste replied, her voice low and steady. "And I know how much it's killing you to keep up this charade."
Tears pricked at the corners of Sapphire's eyes, and she turned away, refusing to let Celeste see her break. "Why are you doing this?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Because I can't stand seeing you like this," Celeste said, her tone uncharacteristically gentle. "You're not as invincible as you want everyone to believe, and that's okay. You don't have to be."
Sapphire's shoulders trembled, and a single tear slid down her cheek. She hated how vulnerable she felt, how easily Celeste had stripped away her defenses.
But as much as she wanted to push her away, to tell her to leave, she couldn't find the strength to do it.
"Why do you care?" she asked, her voice breaking.
Celeste stepped closer, her hand brushing against Sapphire's. "Because," she said softly, "maybe it's you."
The words sent a shiver down Sapphire's spine, and she finally turned to face Celeste, her heart pounding in her chest.
The intensity in Celeste's gaze was almost too much to bear, and for a moment, the world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them.
Sapphire's breath hitched, her mind racing with a thousand conflicting emotions. She didn't know what to do, didn't know what to say.
But before she could make a decision, the sound of approaching footsteps shattered the moment, and they both turned to see Ivy standing at the edge of the garden path, her expression a mix of confusion and concern.
"Sapphire?" Ivy called, her voice cutting through the tension like a blade.
Sapphire took a step back, her chest heaving as she struggled to regain her composure. "I… I need to go," she stammered, brushing past Celeste and heading toward Ivy.
Ivy reached for her, concern etched across her face. "What happened? Are you okay?"
Sapphire nodded quickly, forcing a smile. "I'm fine. Let's just go back inside."
But as Ivy led her away, Sapphire couldn't shake the memory of Celeste's touch, or the way her words had made her feel.
And deep down, she knew her carefully constructed world was beginning to crumble.
