Chapter 13

Six months later, I took my daughter to the hospital for a flu shot, where I ran into Asher.

He looked much more haggard and disheveled than before.

I heard that Asher agreed to give up our daughter to me because his new woman was pregnant, supposedly with a boy.

Under pressure from both the woman and his mother, he reluctantly relinquished custody of our daughter.

His darling did end up giving birth to a son, and the whole family treasured both the woman and the boy.

The woman, empowered by her new status as mother of a son, became increasingly demanding, constantly asking Asher to do this and that.

Asher couldn't find time to run his photography studio anymore. After it closed down, he found a job back in his hometown to make ends meet.

Supporting the entire family on one person's salary had worn him down, the light gone from his eyes.

His misery only made my own happiness more apparent by contrast.
