Chapter 6: Playing with Fire

James stared out the window of Sophia's apartment, the city below a restless sea of lights and noise. The revelations from the factory still haunted him. Andrew was alive, hidden somewhere in the twisted web of Anna's deceit and The Syndicate's schemes. But if James was going to find him, he had to think like his enemy—and that meant plunging into the heart of the music industry, where Morrison Productions had once thrived and where Anna's influence still lurked.

Sophia sat at the small dining table, scrolling through her laptop. "If we're going to find Andrew, we need to know who Anna's been working with in the industry. Morrison Productions may have gone underground, but its network is still buzzing with activity."

James joined her, peering at the screen as Sophia pulled up a list of recent events tied to the label. Exclusive parties, underground shows, and high-profile meetings—it was clear that the label, or at least what remained of it, was far from dead. It had simply adapted, going deeper underground to avoid detection.

"We'll have to start attending these events," James said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Get inside the circles Anna and her contacts move in. If we can find out who's still loyal to her, we might get a lead on Andrew's location."

Sophia nodded. "But this isn't just about showing up. We need to play the game. And in the music industry, it's all about who you know and how well you can blend in." She glanced at James, her expression softening. "You're not exactly the underground scene type."

James smirked, a hint of his old confidence shining through. "Guess I'll have to work on my charm."

Sophia chuckled, the tension between them easing for a moment. "You've got plenty of that. But charm alone won't cut it. We need to look the part, talk the talk. These people can smell an outsider a mile away."

As they continued planning, James couldn't help but steal glances at Sophia. She had been his anchor through the storm of the last few days, her unwavering loyalty a stark contrast to Anna's betrayal. The connection between them was undeniable, growing stronger with each shared moment of danger and trust. And now, sitting this close, he could feel an electricity in the air, something unspoken but palpable.

Sophia's voice broke through his thoughts. "There's a party tomorrow night—a private showcase for up-and-coming artists. It's invite-only, but I think I can get us in. If Anna's working with anyone in the industry, there's a good chance they'll be there."

James nodded, his mind shifting gears. "Then that's our next move. We go in, get the lay of the land, and find out who's pulling the strings."

**The Next Night**

The club was a stark contrast to James's usual haunts. Neon lights flickered against dark walls, and the thumping bass reverberated through the floors. The crowd was a mix of industry insiders, influencers, and artists looking to make their mark. James and Sophia moved through the crowd, blending in with the eclectic mix of fashion and attitudes that defined the scene.

Sophia, dressed in a sleek, black outfit that made her look every bit the music mogul's confidante, led the way. James followed closely, his eyes scanning the room for any familiar faces. It didn't take long before he spotted Anna's associates, mingling near the bar—people who had once been part of Morrison Productions' inner circle.

Sophia leaned in, her voice barely audible over the music. "There's Danny Brooks. He was one of Andrew's top promoters back in the day. If anyone knows what's going on, it's him."

James watched as Danny laughed with a group, his charm on full display as he navigated the crowd. James knew he had to approach carefully—Danny was no fool and could easily spot someone fishing for information.

"Let's split up," James suggested. "I'll talk to Danny, see if I can get anything useful. You keep an eye on Anna's crew."

Sophia nodded, her hand brushing against his arm. The touch lingered longer than necessary, and for a brief moment, they locked eyes. There was a warmth there, a mutual understanding of the uncharted territory they were stepping into—not just with the investigation but with each other.

"Be careful," Sophia whispered, her voice laced with concern. "And don't get too close."

James's gaze lingered on her, the closeness between them making his pulse quicken. "I'll be fine. But don't go too far yourself."

As James made his way toward Danny, he couldn't ignore the mix of emotions swirling inside him. Sophia was more than just a partner in this twisted game—they were becoming something more, something he hadn't expected but couldn't deny. And as he approached Danny, James knew that playing with fire wasn't just about diving into the dangerous world of the music industry. It was also about navigating the complex, unspoken feelings that were growing between him and Sophia.

Tonight, the stakes were higher than ever. James was playing with fire—and he couldn't afford to get burned.
