NO MORE A WEAPON, BUT A BAIT

CHAPTER 49

(No More a Weapon, But a Bait)

Ruth still hadn't woken up.

A whole week had passed, and she just lay there, completely still. I sat beside her, watching her face for any sign of movement. Nothing.

"Ruth, you need to wake up," I whispered. "The doctor said you were just exhausted, but… this isn't normal."

I picked up my phone and played a soft worship song, hoping the music would ease my nerves. Grabbing a damp towel, I gently wiped her face.

Then I froze.

Her skin was burning up.

My chest tightened as I grabbed my phone and ran downstairs to get Uncle James. But when we returned, her temperature was normal again.

Uncle James frowned. "Tell me exactly what you did."

I hesitated. "I played a song and wiped her face. That's when I noticed she was hot."

"Do it again."

I restarted the song, reached out, and touched her forehead. Instantly, it was scorching. My heart pounded as I paused the music, and just like that, her temperature dropped back to normal.

I met Uncle James' gaze. Something wasn't right. This wasn't exhaustion. It was something else.

Something far worse.

Ghanaland-— Tumtum tribe

Inside a dim hut, strange chants filled the air. A thick, suffocating presence lurked in the shadows.

A sharp knock interrupted the ritual.

Assey stepped outside, scowling when he saw Aiko standing there. "What do you want?" he asked, clearly annoyed.

Aiko didn't flinch. Her eyes burned with anger. "What are you doing to my daughter?" she demanded. "I can feel it—she's suffering. And you're the only one who has her."

Assey smirked. "Oh, this? This is just the beginning. That little fool thought she could challenge me. Now, everything they do to save her—prayer, worship, exorcisms—it'll all backfire. Each attempt will only make her suffer more, raising her temperature higher and higher… until her head finally explodes."

Aiko's breath caught in her throat. She had always known Assey was dangerous, but this? This was pure evil.

"So Ruth isn't even a weapon to you anymore?" she asked, her voice shaking. "She's now a...bait?"

Assey scoffed. "You make it sound so cruel." He tilted his head mockingly. "I'm just teaching them a lesson."

Aiko clenched her fists, trembling with fury.

"Go home," Assey said coldly. "There's nothing you can say that will change my mind."

And with that, he turned and slammed the door in her face.
