Grabbing Aiko by the arm, Assey dragged her away from the shore and marched her toward his tribe.
"Jhuni!" he called out.
"Yes, Master. I'm here," Jhuni replied.
"Take her to the dark forest and tie her to the large tree in the middle. By dawn, the evil monster will devour her—leaving no trace behind," Assey ordered coldly. After taking a few steps forward, he turned back and said to Aiko, "My hands are too clean to murder you."
That statement enraged Aiko to her core. She let out a bitter, mocking laugh.
"The almighty Assey of the Tumtum tribe claims his hands are too clean to murder his sister? Hmm. Let me ask you—were they too clean to murder the woman you claimed to love? Too clean to plan the death of your own daughter? Stop pretending, Assey. You can paint yourself white all you want, but the darkness in you will wash it all off. You're a monster."
Her voice grew stronger with every word.
"Don't think that killing me will silence everyone who defies you. Do you think I don't know you murdered Prophet Mawuko? I know."
Assey clenched his fist, struggling to hold back. He didn't want to go back on his words and stain his so-called 'clean' hands.
"You're too dumb to realize," Aiko spat. "Killing Prophet Mawuko and Anna won't shake the prophecy—not even a little. You'll regret this, Assey."
She turned to look at Jhuni, who avoided eye contact at all costs. But Aiko pressed on.
"And you… keep following evil. But know this, the day of your redemption will surely come."
"Take her away before I change my mind," Assey snapped and stormed off.
Jhuni gently held Aiko's arm and led her toward the forest. Neither of them spoke during the walk. The silence hung heavily between them.
When they reached the center of the forest, Jhuni finally broke the silence.
"Aiko… I'm so sorry for everything I did to you and our daug—"
SLAP!
A sharp slap landed on his jaw before he could finish.
"Jhuni, the past is done. But never—never—in this life or the next, call Ruth your daughter. I raised her… until her own father and uncle plotted against her. I admit I was blind. I didn't know Assey's true nature. But you knew—and you said nothing."
Tears streamed down Aiko's face. Jhuni stepped forward to wipe them, but she slapped his hand away.
"Don't touch me, Jhuni. You and Assey are filthy. I don't even want to know how many people you've killed. And now here you are, delivering your daughter's mother to a monster."
She took a deep breath.
"You're a servant sent to do his master's bidding. I don't ever want to see you again."
Aiko walked to the large tree and pressed her back against it.
Jhuni moved forward and forcefully hugged her despite her struggling to break free.
"Aiko," he said, voice trembling. "I know you're hurt. But please… listen to me. I love you. I always have. I can't bear to watch you die. I was tricked too—I didn't know Assey would use our daughter in his wicked schemes. I thought keeping her far away would protect her. That's why I agreed to send her to Barbados."
He looked down in shame.
"Aiko, I've failed her. I've hurt Ruth more than anyone. But please… give me one chance to make it right."
He held her tighter.
"I want to save our daughter… this once."
