Alarming tension ran through Sete's body as the noises in the surrounding area grew louder and louder. Whatever it was, it was getting closer.
The young deity ran her gaze quickly over every inch of concrete in the vicinity, looking for any remnants of corrupted vegetation that could be used as a weapon. The corruption turned the plants grey, so it was especially difficult to distinguish them amid the dull colors of Ousbury and the dimness of the early evening.
Sete noticed that in the ruined buildings there were a few branches of dead vines swaying in the wind, a little too far for her liking. And from a few cracks in the asphalt, handfuls of grass and weeds were sprouting, both dried up. But they're enough.
— Sete, look out! — Thomas shouted, hugging Kai to protect him.
Raising one of her arms over her head, Spring caused some of the grass on the ground near them to grow. The leaves quivered as they regained their original bright green hue and increased in size, their height easily exceeding that of an adult human being, as well as their width.
The grass bent protectively over her and the two boys at the exact moment that a twisted black creature leapt at them. The grass protection was unexpectedly strong, almost as if it were made of rock, so the servant of the End had no choice but to retreat after hitting the barrier.
Five other humanoid forms slowly walked out of the shadows of the abandoned buildings, positioning themselves in a circle around the trio.
Kai and Thomas paled. This time Sete would have to deal with six opponents at once, almost twice as many enemies as they had faced in the corrupted forest.
Suddenly, the first servant of the End to attack stepped forward and let out a terrifying gurgling noise. Sete thought it sounded like some kind of laughter, but had no idea where the sound could have come from, since the thing didn't have a mouth.
"Maybe it farted." — Vez pondered reflexively.
Sete: "..."
That mediocre System was intruding on her thoughts again.
She was about to start lecturing Vez, when the first servant of the End began to speak:
— KE-KE-KE, YOU CAN'T ESCAPE US FOREVER LITTLE DIVINITY. — The creature threatened to take another step forward, but Sete was quick to control one of the blades of grass in her hands and turn it into a spear, the sharp point of which she immediately turned towards the thing. — OUR MASTER ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FALLEN FRIENDS, YOUR STAY IN THIS WORLD WILL BE BRIEF, KE-KE-KE-KE.
The young woman shuddered when that rough low voice mentioned the other seasons. It was only a moment's distraction, but it was enough to provide an opening for the servants of the End to attack.
— Stay there, the grass will protect you! — Sete warned Thomas and Kai, who shrank even further under the sturdy green dome that enveloped them.
As soon as the grass closed in on the boys, four servants of the End set out to attack Spring. She defended herself against the heavy blows, twirling her spear as best she could to ward off the creatures.
At the same time, the two remaining servants of the End attacked the dome protecting the boys. They noticed that their physical attacks were easily repelled by the grass, so they tried to break through the protection in another way.
Sete watched the monsters spread their twisted hands over the green grass with the corner of her eye, dividing her concern between gaining some advantage in the fight and protecting the heirs of the Deities.
Then, the characteristic lifeless gray of the corrupted vegetation slowly spread from the long black fingers to the leaves of the dome, drying out the grass once again.
