Skyler stood in the middle of a gloomy circus tent, looking around in confusion. The air was thick with melancholy, and the faint sound of a slow violin played in the distance.
Across from him, sitting on a broken wooden stool, was Sad Joker.
He wasn't like the others. No laughter, no tricks, no chaos. Just a deep, heavy sigh. His long, drooping sleeves dragged on the floor as he slouched. His hat, oversized and sagging, looked as miserable as he did.
His painted face had streaks of blue and black makeup, almost like he had been crying nonstop.
"Sigh… So you're my opponent…" Sad Joker muttered, barely lifting his head.
Skyler grinned, adjusting his sleeves. "That's right! The great Skyler, the Fool Tarot, is here! And I'm here to—"
Sad Joker cut him off with another deep sigh.
"Why even bother?"
Skyler blinked. "Huh?"
Sad Joker slowly stood up. "Nothing matters. You'll win. I'll lose. We'll both disappear one day. What's the point of this fight?"
Skyler snickered. "Oh man, you sound like an emo teenager who just finished reading a philosophy book."
Sad Joker blinked. "...That was kind of funny."
Skyler beamed. "Oh yeah? Then watch this!"
He pulled out a tiny red clown nose and slapped it onto his face.
Then he juggled three invisible balls.
Sad Joker stared. "You're not even holding anything."
Skyler shrugged. "Yeah, but imagine if I was."
Sad Joker exhaled through his nose. "...That's mildly amusing."
Skyler pumped his fist. "Aha! Progress!"
But before Skyler could celebrate, Sad Joker snapped his fingers.
Suddenly—a wave of sorrow washed over Skyler.
His chest felt heavy. His throat tightened.
Tears started welling in his eyes for no reason.
Skyler sniffled. "W-Wait… What the hell? Why do I feel like my puppy just ran away?"
Sad Joker sighed. "Because… emotions are fragile. One moment you laugh. The next, you're drowning in sadness."
Skyler wiped his eyes aggressively. "Okay, okay—so you're playing dirty, huh? You wanna make me cry? FINE!"
He took a deep breath… and let the tears flow.
Skyler collapsed onto his knees, fake sobbing. "WAAAAH! WHY DOES HAPPINESS NEVER LAST? WHY DID THEY STOP MAKING MY FAVORITE SNACK? WHY DID THAT ANIME END ON A CLIFFHANGER?"
Sad Joker nodded solemnly. "Exactly… life is suffering."
Skyler suddenly stopped crying. "Nah, I was just messing with you."
Sad Joker paused. "...Wait, what?"
Skyler jumped back onto his feet, grinning. "You might be able to make me cry, but buddy, I can make you laugh!"
Sad Joker rubbed his chin. "Doubtful. But go on."
Skyler took out a banana.
Sad Joker squinted. "…What's that for?"
Skyler held it up dramatically. "I bet you five bucks I can slip on this banana peel in the funniest way possible."
Sad Joker sighed. "Predictable slapstick isn't—"
Before he could finish, Skyler threw the banana peel over his own head.
It landed five feet behind him.
Skyler then ran forward, jumped into the air, flipped twice… and somehow landed DIRECTLY on the banana peel.
He flailed, spun, and crashed onto his back with a loud "OOF!"
Sad Joker stared.
His lips trembled.
Then—he snorted.
Skyler sat up, pointing. "AHA! I HEARD THAT!"
Sad Joker crossed his arms. "I-It was just a reflex!"
Skyler grinned. "Oh, we're just getting started."
For every joke Skyler told, Sad Joker countered with a heartbreaking story.
Skyler: "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
Sad Joker: "Because it had nowhere else to go, abandoned and alone."
Skyler: "Knock knock!"
Sad Joker: "Who's there?"
Skyler: "Not my dad! He went to buy milk twenty years ago!"
Sad Joker: "…Okay, that one was funny."
But Sad Joker kept fighting back.
He made Skyler remember every sad anime ending, every puppy that never got adopted, every friend who moved away and never texted back.
Skyler was on the verge of breaking.
But then—he took a deep breath and smiled.
"You know what, buddy? You're right."
Sad Joker tilted his head. "Huh?"
Skyler walked forward.
"Sometimes life sucks. Sometimes people leave, sometimes things don't go our way. But…"
He grinned, pointing at Sad Joker.
"That's why we laugh."
Sad Joker froze.
Skyler patted his own chest. "We laugh because we know sadness is real. We laugh because we don't wanna drown in misery forever. And I think deep down…"
Skyler held out his hand.
"You wanna laugh too, don't you?"
Sad Joker stared at him.
His fingers twitched.
Then, slowly… he smiled.
Just a little.
And then—he let out a chuckle.
It started as a small giggle, but then it grew.
Until—
Sad Joker BURST into laughter.
Tears streamed down his face, but this time, they were happy tears.
And then—his body dissolved into colorful confetti.
As he disappeared, his last words echoed:
"Thank you… for reminding me why laughter exists."
Skyler wiped his forehead. "Whew! That was the toughest crowd I've ever worked with."
