Chapter 4, Burden: Part 13

Nina's response is cold and determined, with only one purpose in her voice, "I am here for Ronan. Nothing else." The Weaver of Shadows inclines their head, a slow, deliberate movement. A single, iridescent tear traces a path down their cheek, disappearing into the folds of their cloak. "Ronan," the Weaver whispers, the sounds like a sigh of a dying wind. "He seeks power... a power that will consume him if he is not careful. He believes he can control the darkness, he believes he can save his people. However, the darkness always wins in the end.

The Weaver gestures with a slender hand towards a path that seems to materialize from the shadows themselves, a dark ribbon cutting through the heart of the clearing. "This path leads to the heart of the Shadowfen, to the place that Ronan seeks. But know this, child. The journey is fraught with peril. The creatures here are not mere shadows; they are fragments of lost souls, twisted by the blight that consumes this land. Their pain is infectious, their hunger... insatiable.

The Weaver's gaze softens, a flicker of something akin to compassion in their luminous eyes. "Ronan believes he can find redemption within this darkness. Perhaps he can. But it is a path of sacrifice. A path that will demand everything you have, and more." A long silence stretches between them, broken only by the whispering leaves. Then the Weaver speaks again, their voice barely audible. "Follow this path, child. Find Ronan. But remember... some journeys cannot be reversed." The Weaver fades, leaving only the shimmering, ethereal glow and the newly formed path beckoning Nina onward.

Nina, gripping her amulet, feels a cold knot of fear tighten in her stomach. The Weaver's words echo in her ears, painting a grim picture of the dangers that lie ahead. Yet, her determination remains unwavering. Ronan is her ally, her protector, and she will not abandon him. With a silent nod to Rex, who whimpers softly but remains steadfast at her side, Nina steps onto the shadowy path, the darkness threatening to swallow her whole. The air grows colder, and the whispers intensify. Nina turns back toward the Weaver stood and says, "If journeys could be reversed, then nobody would grow." She then faces forward and takes her first step into the darkness. The journey to the heart of the Shadowfen begins.
