Chapter 4, Burden: Part 19

Nina, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs, speaks, her voice barely a whisper in the vast cove. "Can... can you show me the way?" she asks, her gaze fixed on the swirling orb, its light both mesmerizing and terrifying. The figure remains still for a long moment, the only sound of the relentless hum of the orb and the frantic thump-thump-thump of her own heart. Then, slowly, the figure raises its shadowed head. The movement is fluid, unnatural, like a puppet moved by unseen strings.

Its voice, when it comes, is not the booming resonance of before, but a quiet, almost melancholic whisper. "The way is not a path shown, child," it says, its words hanging in the air like smoke. "It is a choice, a sacrifice. Your companion chose his path; now you must choose yours." The orb ceases its spinning, its light dimming slightly, as if reflecting the figure's somber tone. "To follow Ronan is to walk the path of oblivion. To truly grasp the nature of the blight, you must first confront its essence, its source. But to do so is to risk becoming a part of it."

The figure gestures towards a section of the cove wall, previously obscured by shadow. Now, it is revealed; a passage, dark and foreboding, unlike the ethereal path that brought Nina here. It is a chasm of pure shadow, a stark contrast to the luminescent orb and the strange, pulsating crystals that decorate the surroundings. "This," the figure whispers, its voice barely audible above the silence, "is the way to the heart of the Shadowfen. Choose wisely, child. For there is no turning back." The weight of the decision hangs heavy in the air, a suffocating blanket of uncertainty. Nina faces a stark choice: follow the path of her lost companion, or embrace the unknown darkness that beckons from the shadowed chasm.
