Chapter 3

"The ambulance still has a long way to go before reaching City Hospital. I'm worried he won't make it that long."

"What should we do then?"

Scarlett furrowed her brow tightly. She tried calling Susan multiple times, but all attempts failed to connect.

The volunteer beside me kept shouting, urging me to stay conscious, but the monitors in the ambulance showed my condition was critical.

Without hesitation, Scarlett directed the ambulance to head for the nearest rescue team headquarters.

They also had highly skilled medical staff who could perform emergency surgery.

However, upon arriving at the rescue team's base, they discovered all the available medical personnel had been called away.

Susan's team member, hearing the commotion, stumbled out groggily.

His eyes widened instantly at the sight before him.

"Where is everyone? Why isn't anybody here?"

Scarlett was on the verge of losing it. In all her years as a doctor, she'd likely never encountered a situation like this.

The team member's face turned pale with fright upon seeing my condition.

"There was a multi-car pileup in the tunnel three miles from here. Captain Carlisle took all the medical staff to assist. There's no one left at headquarters who can perform surgery..."The teammates stammered, explaining to them while apologizing to me.

She must have also believed all along that I was making up lies to deceive her.

"This is absolutely insane! Even if there was an accident, they can't take everyone away."

Some volunteers suggested to Scarlett that they go directly to the city hospital for surgery.

But she just shook her head gravely, her eyes brimming with sadness.

"Forget about saving his life, even if we do, we can't avoid amputation. His leg is already necrotic."

Hearing these words, my breathing quickened involuntarily.

I'm only thirty-three years old. If I really have to get an amputation, it means I'll spend the rest of my life with a cold prosthetic limb.

Just as everyone was at their wits' end,

Hurried footsteps were heard from outside the main door.

"Quick, go perform surgery on Carter immediately. He's severely injured."

It was Susan's voice. Even though I couldn't see her face clearly, I could still feel her concern.

The place where Carter had his accident was only three miles from here, making this the best choice for surgery.

Susan passed by me without even a glance. She just told all available medical staff to prioritize Carter's treatment.Scarlett could see at a glance that although Carter's wound looked frightening, it was only superficial and didn't require major surgery at all.

She quickly grabbed Susan's hand, her tone extremely urgent.

"Asher's injuries are more severe than Carter's. He can wait, but Asher can't. You need to give me some staff. I need to operate on Asher right now."

Susan's eyes only briefly glanced at me, the disgust in them completely unconcealed.

She shook off Scarlett's hand, no longer treating Scarlett as a friend at all.

"Scarlett, if you're so worried about him, why don't you go live with him? Asher was just buried in snow, what could happen to him? But Carter is different. He's covered in blood. I can't bear the pain of losing him again."

Susan's voice choked up, tears falling drop by drop.

Then her tone became extremely resolute.

"Resources are limited here. Priority goes to treating Carter. If anything happens, I'll take full responsibility!"

Hearing these words, my heart instantly turned to ashes.
