As dawn breaks over the Redwood Estate with a frail light that belied the undercurrent of tension that was cramming beneath its refurbished walls. The events that had happened to them, Halmeoni's desperate confession and their clash in the dark chamber, had left their damage on everyone. Now, as the estate wakes to a brand new day, the staying uncertainty of enemies in the dark was mingling with the balanced routines of daily life.
In the quiet lonesome of his private office, Heuk Cheon was sitting in front of a small, ragged desk. He was staring at the parchment of the scribbled messages that he had written based on what Halmeoni hesitantly confessed. It was a crude message that hints at her unknown employers and their past grudges. The words had been a bit vague, but they still carried a heavy weight that made his blood run cold.
"Broken pieces of old hatreds, hidden in the depths of the Murim underworld..." he starts to whisper to himself. His eyes was as hard as flint, it was drifting over the fading black ink.
A gentle knock at the door paused his thoughts. Seo Ryung enters with an expression of both vigilance and concern.
"Master, the kids are already awake and kicking. They are beginning to do their daily tasks, and there is chatter among them of the past events, it caused quite a stir of commotion." Seo Ryung said in a low but steady tone.
Heuk Cheon while folding the piece of parchment carefully. "I am aware." he answered back. "I cannot let out enemies, unknown or not, hurt the frail peace that we have started to build here. Today, I must come to learn more about what Halmeoni revealed. But of course, first we must need to make sure that Redwood Estate remains secure."
Seo Ryung inclines his head, "I have already doubled the escort guard's shifts, and the estate's perimeter is being patrolled continuously. I will stay alert. The kids must not notice our anxiousness."
A quick nod was exchanged between them. "Good," Heuk Cheon replied. "Now, let us go and join the others. The day's duties awaits us."
Outside his office, the estate was buzzing with familiar sounds of their morning routine. The children was still half asleep but they were eager, they gathered in the main chamber. Han-ju had already taken his spot at the front of the makeshift assembly line, while Chul-woo, Ae-rin, Su-yeon, and Jin-mu came together with a mix of excitement and staying apprehension from the previous night's events.
Lee Jin-Ho was moving among them with his usual gentle efficiency, he guided the children to wash up and then come join for breakfast. His gentle voice was carried throughout the corridors.
"Remember, everyone, discipline and respect are our core values, both in training and in life here. We will begin today with a short review of today's chores and then move into our morning lesson on vigilance."
Han-ju who was sitting upright at the table, started nodding seriously. "Yeah, Master Heuk said that we must always be ready. I wonder if he means more than just standing in stances."
Chul-woo, ever the chatterbox, butted in with a smile, "I bet it means that we have to be ready to fight off any mean ninjas or spy pawns!" his statement earned him both laughter and nervous looks from the younger kids.
Ae-rin's voice was quiet yet steady, it cut through the levity. "Maybe it means that we should remain brave even when things start to get scary." Her sentence echoed with a maturity beyond her age.
Heuk Cheon stepped forward into the center of the chamber, his presence swiftly silenced the wave of voices. "Today, we will increase our strengths," he announced, his tone was firm but it was still measured. "We will practice not only our physical stances as a warrior but we will also fortify our inner resolve to protect what matters to us. Always keep this in mind, true strength will be measured by one's ability to stay and stand guard over those who cannot do it for themselves."
A thoughtful hush enveloped the assembly, even the usually noisy troublemaker Chul-woo was silent for a moment as if he was fully intent on absorbing the weight of Heuk Cheon's words.
After they ate their breakfast, Heuk Cheon started a martial arts training in the manor's courtyard. The gentle noise of feet on stone mixed with the calming rustle of leaves and the distant cries of birds. The brats were gathered in a rough circular formation, while a couple of the older kids, Han-ju, Jin-mu, and even a carefully excited Chul-woo, took spots in the center to learn the basics of stances and balance.
"Try to stand firmly," Heuk Cheon guided each of them as he was demonstrating a basic defensive stance. "Your feet should feel the earth under you. When the world shakes, you will learn not to fall."
Han-ju tried to copy his stance, although his legs was trembling with the ache of holding proper form. "Is it like this?" he asks, though his voice was uncertain.
"Good, that's better." Heuk Cheon replied while stepping next to him and guiding him with a firm hand. "But you must practice this form until it becomes second nature."
Near them, Chul-woo was giggling and wobbling, then tried his best again, his actions was getting him wholesome chuckles from his peers. "If you fall, at least you'd make a funny noise!" he joked about.
Even as the children were practicing, the eyes of Heuk Cheon were constantly drifting towards the Redwood Estate's perimeters. He could not shake the vision of the shady robed figure in the town market or the unsettling look inside Halmeoni's eyes. Every time a kid messed up in their stance, he remembers the hidden danger, and it spurred him to press the brats harder, to teach them the importance of continuous vigilance.
"Please remember." he said while pausing a bit, "this training session is not just about learning how to fight. It is also about awareness. Learn to look beyond what is in front of you. The world is brimming of hidden threats. Only when you are able to see them can you protect yourselves."
Han-ju's eyes were shining with determination. "I will be ready." he whispered to himself, it echoed the promise that many of the kids started to share in their own silent ways.
As the training session halted down and the children were dismissed off to complete their chores for the day, a sudden noise near the iron gates drew their attentions. A tall, cloaked figure on horseback was riding up to Redwood Estate. The shadowy figure's face was hidden by a wide brimmed had and a hood, making it a bit hard to know whether he was a friend or a foe at first look.
Seo Ryung was the first one to reach the iron gates, he frowned as he saw the rider dismount. "Master, we have another unknown visitor." He reported, his voice was both low and cautious.
Heuk Cheon's eyes narrowed. "Bring the rider forward. I wish to see who dares approach us without any notice beforehand."
Within moments, the rider was escorted near the entrance by Do-won and Jung-soo. The cloaked figure slowly started to remove his hat, it revealed a young man with sharp eyes and a lean, agile build. His clothes was modest yet it carried the unmistakable symbol of a messenger from one of the lessor known factions of the martial world, it was a faction that praised itself in secrecy and whispered alliances.
"Greetings, Master Heuk." the young man said, his voice was steady but there was a hint of urgency. "I am known as Min-joon, I'm a messenger sent by the Sable Tiger Clan." He stopped, he looked anxiously over his shoulder. "I come with a warning."
Heuk Cheon's posture quickly stiffened. "A warning? Speak clearly."
Min-joon's eyes flicked over to Seo Ryung before his attention turned back to Heuk Cheon. "There have been movements in the Murim underworld. The factions that dislike the idea of your transformation, your turn from Demon Lord to now guardian, are starting to gather. They see your redemption as a threat to the old order, and they are planning something quite... problematic."
A wave of concern passed through the assembled adults. Lee Jin-Ho was the first to step forward with concern stuck on his face. "Problematic? In what manner? Are they planning an attack?"
Min-joon nodded. "I cannot say all the details, but there are quite a few whispers of an alliance that was starting to form. It is a collective of remnants from several of your rival sects. Their goal is to restore what they call the 'old ways', where power was measured in blood and fear. They view your work here as a sign of betrayal."
Heuk Cheon's eyes was blazing with controlled anger. "So, they seek to destabilize Redwood Estate and the peace we have built," he said while trying his best to remain calm. "And you? What of your role in all this?"
