Shopping for Necessity!
Chapter 45:he gonna get a long boi!
Author: So, Professor McGonagall left you alone with a goblin!?
Vira: He asked her to. Also, I was interested in what he had to say, so I just remained inside.
Author: Still, leaving you alone is kinda...
Vira: Again, wizards don't seem to consider any magical creature with even a bit of intellect a threat. Goblins, centaurs, merfolk, giants, and even dementors—they dislike most, for sure, but never really seem to feel threatened.
Since the professor was waiting for him close by, Vira reached her pretty soon after a little sprint.
And just after getting near her, Vira seemed excited, as if the poster he had no clue about or the golden coin with a weird man and a dragon as head and tail were of any interest to him.
Like, seriously—the coin, slightly larger than a penny, was dimmer than anything remaining in the briefcase. Forget about the beautiful gems; that thing looked worse than the few gold bricks set aside.
That thing, although it looked like gold, was nowhere near as good. Vira even thought it was just golden paint, but the results would have to wait until he went back and had it analyzed.
Then, using the same excitement in his voice, he asked Professor McGonagall where they would go next.
Smiling, the professor said, "Let's go get your uniform!"
Saying that, she and Vira headed out of the white fortress and toward a clothing shop nearby.
Unlike the grand but unfitting structure of Gringotts, the shop completely blended into the environment.
The shop looked old-fashioned like every other in the area, but it was neat. The glass showcasing the clothes was clean and huge, without any spots.
The clothes looked old-fashioned but still comfortable enough that anyone in this era wouldn't mind wearing them outside without being judged. But there was one that managed to attract Vira's attention.
The clothes were hung on a mannequin that looked like a child around his age. The mannequin featured plain black robes with a white shirt and black trousers. To top it off, it was partially covered by a black cloak and a huge pointy hat. It also had a tie—the tie had a yellow surface with black lines decorating it.
The reason such a normal piece of clothing attracted his attention was that they were the only ones that looked like a uniform—and, well, the pointy hat reminded him of what was in the letter.
Also, the fact that there were four of them covering the entire left side of the window didn't help. The only thing different about them were the ties. The one Vira focused on had yellow and black colors, but there were also three others—one with a blue and silver palette, one with red and yellow, and the last one had a green and silver color, which reminded him of the bamboo viper he met while traveling.
And without further ado, after looking at the few clothing items and reading the neat and beautifully written sign that said "Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions," Vira headed inside with Professor McGonagall.
Speaking of signs, Gringotts had two of them. One was up front, displaying the words "Gringotts Wizarding Bank," and the other was inside, featuring a literal paragraph on it.
Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed.
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn.
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding treasures scattered there.
But Vira paid no attention to it—when had guards and barbed fences ever stopped him from stealing? He hadn't stolen anything in a long time, but still, there was no way he or anyone else would be paying attention to a mere threat.
Back to the topic—after entering the shop, they were greeted by a pretty girl. She seemed to be working as a clerk, as she stammered her greeting the instant she saw Professor McGonagall.
Well, the kind-looking lady who was talking to some women in the back seemed to notice this, as she came over and said:
Madam Malkin: "Professor! Which clothes of mine interest you today?"
Professor McGonagall: "We are here to get Vira his Hogwarts uniform."
Hearing her, the attention of both the kind old lady and the pretty clerk seemed to shift toward him as they both stared. Madam Malkin kept the same smile on her face, but the clerk looked pretty surprised after getting a good look at him.
Her intense gaze made Vira contemplate whether the wizarding world had good minor protection laws. But when the intensity toned down a bit, she seemed more like a fan of his or something.
Such adoring gazes were pretty common for Vira in the Muggle world, but getting one in the wizarding world was a first. Ever since he entered The Leaky Cauldron, all he had received were greedy, curious, or surprised looks, so getting a gaze full of admiration felt pretty nice—though it would have been better if she didn't look as if she would eat him whole.
Overall, it was a nice experience. So when Madam Malkin asked her to take him and find a uniform that fit, he wasn't particularly alert, and everything went smoothly.
After that, they went to another place full of books called Flourish and Blotts to get his schoolbooks. Vira made plans to buy more later when he came back to explore.
He would have done it now, but he was careful not to arouse any resentment or bad feelings from Professor McGonagall. After all, he had no clue if the charm would put more strain and cause exhaustion if more things were added to it. And although there wasn't much variety in the number of books, there were still a lot.
Then, they went to a smelly place that constantly assaulted Vira's nose. So after getting the necessary ingredients and a cauldron, they quickly left to get a pet.
The journey to Eeylops Owl Emporium was pretty easy and without much commotion, as the reprimand—or rather, consolation—from earlier had already spread throughout every corner of Diagon Alley.
Vira simply chose a healthy black owl that looked fairly strong. Although he didn't think he would be using it much, since his affinity would let him choose any owl to deliver messages and have them work for him, it would still be nice to have a way to communicate with Professor McGonagall before actually entering Hogwarts.
After getting everything else, it was time for Vira to get his very first wand—and hopefully, one that would remain useful throughout his life.
So, they headed to the place that sold them.
