Arthur quickly got into the car and slammed his foot on the accelerator. The vehicle slowly moved forward, passing the security checkpoint and heading toward the villa area atop the mountain.
Although the villa area in the game seems quite small with only a few villas, in reality, the North Oak District's villa area is much larger. Of course, some of these villas are occupied, while others are not.
For example, Hanako Arasaka's villa is here, but it's rarely occupied. If you were daring enough, you could sleep in the very bed where Hanako Arasaka once laid.
It's a shame, though—Arthur had the ability, but not the courage. He wasn't ready to fall into the arms of a rich woman just yet.
Jack, who had been quiet in the car, sighed in relief, though his face remained a little pale. He turned to Arthur, clearly upset. "This was a bad idea, Arthur. It couldn't have been worse. What Lao said is true—you're a complete lunatic."
Arthur turned the steering wheel with one hand, shrugging casually as he looked at the passing scenery. "Don't worry about whether it was a good idea or not. Just tell me, is it working or not?"
Jack stared out the window at the passing villas, finally nodding.
Although the place looked a bit rundown from the outside, Arthur's plan had proven to be the best solution.
First, Arthur got through the security checkpoint without any problems, relying entirely on his quick thinking and smooth talking.
He also used the secrecy of their mission as a reason to reach an understanding with the security captain.
If things went wrong later, the captain wouldn't admit that the two of them had even passed through the checkpoint.
What about surveillance? In a villa area like this, the idea of installing cameras seemed laughable.
The upper echelons of Night City were involved in shady dealings at all times. Their private lives were as murky as the river running through the city. Installing cameras would only capture things no one wanted to be seen.
Of course, there were no cameras. But that didn't mean there weren't other forms of surveillance. Intelligent robots patrolled the area, equipped with their own detection systems. These collected data locally, and drones in the air did the same.
Jack sat up a little, rummaging through the seat to access the compartment below, where the mission equipment was stored.
Since they were operating in an upscale area, both Jack's and Arthur's pistols were equipped with silencers. While silencers couldn't completely eliminate noise, they could at least muffle it to some degree.
Jack searched frantically for his clothes, scratching his head in confusion. He had clearly placed them with the weapons and equipment. Why were they gone?
Now, he was stuck in that ridiculous dress, feeling uncomfortable all over. A chill ran through his legs. If he had to wear this any longer, he was afraid the psychological damage would be permanent. He needed a change, especially since they were now inside the villa area. There was no need to keep wearing the dress.
Arthur noticed Jack's discomfort and smirked. "I threw your clothes in the trunk while you were distracted. But there's no need to change. We're going in and coming back out in just a few minutes. It'll be fine."
Jack gave him a skeptical look. "What's the point of staying in this ridiculous outfit? Do I really look like an Animal Gang member?"
Arthur shrugged, his tone casual. "Who knows? Maybe they'll think you're a woman from the Animal Gang. And honestly, even if something is caught on camera, it won't matter. We'll be in and out so quickly, no one will have time to make a big deal out of it."
Jack tilted his head, mulling over Arthur's words. "That does make some sense…"
After wearing the dress for this long, what was a few more minutes? Once they were done, they could leave quickly, and Jack would never have to look at the stupid thing again. He just hoped it didn't leave permanent scars on his psyche. He was already planning a visit to Misty once they were done, because he felt like his soul had been severely wounded.
A few minutes later, Arthur drove the car to the target location.
After checking the area and seeing that there were no drones or security robots around, he gunned the accelerator and drove the car off the main path, steering it into some bushes.
Arthur parked the car, exhaled in relief, then opened the door, took Jack's gun, and slung it over his back.
He crouched down in the corner of the bushes, waving Jack over.
"Listen, Jack, I'm not saying this to insult you, but if someone needs to be thrown, it should be me. You know, with your tiny arms, you might not be able to toss me very far."
Jack grumbled as he clasped his hands in a prayer-like gesture and quickly moved over to Arthur.
Arthur rolled his eyes and pulled Jack into the corner with him. He crouched down beside him and began to speak, his tone serious. "Before we start, there are a few things I need to make clear to you."
"First, we're here for money. We're not here for a fight. Michael's probably got a platinum member of the trauma team. If he gets injured, the trauma team will show up, and that'll bring the entire villa's security down on us."
"Second, we need to be as quiet as possible. No loud noises. No unnecessary movement. We're here to solve this quietly, without drawing attention. Got it?"
Jack nodded immediately. "No problem, Arthur. I'll follow your lead. We'll go in quietly, put a gun in Michael's face, get him to transfer the money, knock him out, and slip away. Simple enough, right?"
Arthur scratched the back of his head and nodded slowly. "Yeah, it sounds simple, but I'm not so sure it'll go as smoothly as you think."
It was a basic plan, and if everything went according to the script, they could get in and out without trouble. But Arthur had seen enough to know that things rarely went according to plan.
Then again, this was hardly a high-risk job. It wasn't like attacking the Arasaka Building. They didn't need a detailed, multi-step plan. They just had to be quick and efficient.
He thought back to V's reckless attack on the Arasaka Building—no plan, just guns blazing. It had worked for them, and Arthur figured a similar approach might work here.
"Alright. Let's go!"
Arthur sprang to his feet and, with one smooth motion, jumped over the wall and into Michael's yard.
As soon as he landed, he immediately raised his gun, scanning the area. When he was sure there were no immediate threats, he tapped the wall to signal Jack, then ducked into the nearby bushes.
Jack followed, jumping over the wall and landing in a roll before coming up beside Arthur. Once in position, Jack tugged on his skirt, feeling more irritated by the second. He hated how inconvenient it was to wear. The dress was so tight, it almost made him lose his balance—and he was terrified that it might show more than it was supposed to.
As he surveyed the surroundings, Jack muttered, "This is nothing like I expected."
Arthur frowned. It wasn't just Jack who was confused; Arthur himself felt something was off.
The environment felt different from what he had anticipated. The villa was too quiet, too still. It didn't seem right, and there was a lingering sense that they were walking into something far more complicated than they'd planned.
