NEW DISCOVERY

Mike held the warm, radiating crystal in his hands, and its warmth travelled through them. It felt odd—like it breathed.

Rin watched intently and asked, "What do you think it does?"

Mike shrugged. "I don't know, but assuming it was placed here by the Great Sage, then it must have been important."

Rin nodded. "We must exercise care with it."

Mike placed the crystal in his pocket and then took one last survey of the workshop. There were many items yet to be examined. Old scrolls, tools, and more weapons filled the room.

Scarlethia tweeted and landed on a dusty bookshelf. She knocked over a little book, and it landed firmly in Mike's hands.

"Huh?" He flicked off the dust and took a closer look at the cover. Essence of Fire: How to Connect with Its Energy

Rin leaned closer. "Firepower? That sounds useful."

Mike smirked. "Think I can learn fire magic with that?"

"Perhaps," Rin answered. "But don't burn down the cabin, okay?"

Mike laughed. "No promises."

He skimmed through its pages. It was about managing fire, balancing energy, and even directing power through weapons. It looked complicated, but regarding it, there appeared to be a sense of rightness about it.

Scarlethia gave a happy chirp as if to encourage him.

Rin sat at the table, swinging her legs back and forth. "So, then?"

Mike gazed at her, then at the workshop. "We're staying here for now. Learn what we can. Maybe, if the Great Sage left all this here for a reason."

Rin thought for a moment, then chuckled. "Good one, and a pleasure to have a roof over our heads for a change."

Mike chuckled. "Yes, no sleeping in the mud."

They both sat in silence for a little while. It was quiet—just them, and Scarlethia, and the quiet popping of the fireplace upstairs.

Rin abruptly yawned and stretched. "I'm tired."

Mike stood. "So let's call it a night then. We can work out more in the morning."

As they proceeded upstairs, Rin hung back. "Hey, Mike?"

"Yeah?"

She glanced at him for a moment, then smiled. "Thank you. For everything."

Mike blinked, taken aback a little. Grinning, then, "Going soft on me, Rin."

Rin rolled her eyes and departed, but a faint smile tugged at her mouth, and Mike could detect it even when she'd turned her back to him.

He watched her go, his heart full of a sensation that bore no relation to the flame magic he longed to learn about.

Maybe… just possibly… that journey hadn't been about power at all.

Their day continued without any luck. As they sat around the table, Mike thought about the [store] he had wanted to investigate a while back but never got the time.

"Store," Mike said, as the screen pooped up in front of him.

Mike was intrigued by this message and called Rin to have a look.

"Wow you can buy skills, I didn't know that," Rin said.

"Me too, and I can gift them to someone close to me" Mike replied.

"We need gold," Mike said as he pulled out a pouch of gold from his storage.

They scanned the skills each of them choosing what they wanted.
