The platform trembled as the shadowy figure loomed from the depths of the chasm, its form shifting and rippling like a living nightmare. Two burning, ember-like eyes locked onto the group, radiating malice and hunger. The air grew colder, the oppressive mist swirling tighter around them as if it had a will of its own.
"Well," Ethan muttered, gripping his glowing pipe, "if this isn't the setup for my last words, I don't know what is."
Lucas tightened his hold on his shield, stepping into a defensive stance. "I hope you have something better than that planned, because it's coming."
"It's always coming," Karis snapped, her knife gleaming in her hand as she moved to the edge of the platform. "Stop talking and focus."
"Focus is my middle name," Ethan replied, shifting into position. "Well, that and regretting all my life choices."
The creature let out a low, guttural growl, the sound reverberating through the air like a drumbeat. The mist seemed to coil around its body, forming tendrils that lashed out, testing the edges of the platform. Naomi, crouched near the edge, raised her bow and pulled an arrow from her quiver in one fluid motion.
"Targets don't get much bigger than that," she said, her voice calm despite the tension in the air.
"Big doesn't mean slow," Karis warned. "Don't assume anything."
As if in response, the creature surged forward, a massive claw slamming down onto the platform with a deafening crash. The entire structure tilted violently, sending Ethan stumbling backward.
"Yep," Ethan said, catching himself. "Definitely not slow."

The Fight Begins
The group sprang into action. Naomi released her arrow, the shot streaking through the mist and striking the creature's shoulder. It let out an enraged roar, its shadowy form twisting as if trying to shrug off the attack. Lucas charged forward, his shield raised, slamming into the creature's claw with enough force to send a shockwave rippling through the platform.
"Go for the weak points!" Karis shouted, darting to the side. Her movements were quick and calculated, her blade slashing through one of the mist-like tendrils. The tendril recoiled, hissing as if in pain, and she pressed her advantage, striking again.
Ethan hesitated for a split second, his eyes darting between the others as they moved with purpose. His heart pounded in his chest, the sheer size of the creature making him feel like an ant staring down a boot. But then Lucas yelled, his voice snapping Ethan out of his paralysis.
"Ethan! Left flank!"
"Got it!" Ethan shouted, darting toward the edge of the platform. The mist seemed to thicken around him, clinging to his skin like icy fingers. The creature's second claw came crashing down, aiming to pin him, but he activated Shadowstep, his body phasing out just in time to avoid being crushed.
Reappearing behind the claw, Ethan raised his pipe and brought it down with all his strength. The impact sent a ripple of glowing energy through the creature's shadowy form, and it let out another roar, retreating slightly.
"Well, that worked," Ethan said, panting. "Let's do it again."

The Platform Tilts
The platform shuddered violently, tilting as the creature shifted its weight. Naomi nearly lost her footing but caught herself, releasing another arrow that found its mark in the creature's chest. "This thing isn't just big," she said, her voice tense. "It's intelligent. It's trying to knock us off."
"Stay low and spread out," Karis commanded, her tone clipped. She leaped toward the creature, her blade gleaming as she struck at the tendrils coiling around its limbs. "We can't let it control the fight."
Lucas gritted his teeth, bracing himself as the creature swung one massive claw in his direction. The impact against his shield sent him skidding backward, but he held his ground, planting his feet firmly on the shifting platform. "It's too strong to take head-on," he said, his voice strained. "We need a plan."
"I've got a plan," Ethan said, dodging another swipe from the creature's claws. "It's called 'Don't die.' How am I doing so far?"
Naomi smirked despite the tension, firing another arrow that pierced one of the glowing runes on the creature's arm. It let out a pained roar, recoiling slightly. "You're surprisingly still alive, so I'd say it's working."

The Creature Changes Tactics
The creature reared back, its ember-like eyes glowing brighter as the mist around it began to condense. The tendrils grew thicker, more solid, lashing out at the group with renewed ferocity. One caught Ethan off guard, slamming into his side and sending him sprawling across the platform.
"Ethan!" Lucas shouted, charging forward to intercept another tendril that was aiming for his fallen teammate. His shield absorbed the impact, but the force of the blow pushed him to one knee.
"I'm fine," Ethan groaned, pushing himself up. He winced, feeling the ache in his ribs. "Just… remind me not to get hit by that again."
"Stay behind cover," Karis barked, slicing through another tendril. "You're no use to us dead."
"I'm no use to anyone, period," Ethan muttered, but he forced himself to his feet, gripping his pipe tightly.
The creature shifted its attention, its glowing eyes locking onto Naomi. It let out a bone-chilling screech, and the mist surged toward her like a tidal wave. Naomi rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding being engulfed, and loosed an arrow that struck the creature's glowing eyes.
The impact staggered the creature, its screech cutting off abruptly. "The eyes!" Naomi shouted. "They're a weak point!"

A Desperate Push
Karis didn't hesitate. She dashed forward, her blade flashing as she leaped onto the creature's arm, using the ridges in its shadowy form as footholds. The creature thrashed, but she held on, climbing higher until she was within striking distance of its face.
"Lucas, cover her!" Ethan yelled, moving to the center of the platform to draw the creature's attention. He activated Forge's Will, a surge of energy spreading through the group. Their movements became sharper, their strikes more precise, as the temporary boost took effect.
Lucas roared, slamming his shield into the creature's arm to keep it from swatting Karis off. Naomi fired arrow after arrow, each one finding its mark in the glowing runes on the creature's body. Ethan darted forward, using Ravager's Pounce to leap onto the creature's other arm. His pipe struck with enough force to send another ripple of energy through its form.
Karis reached the creature's head, her blade poised for a killing blow. With a precise strike, she drove it into one of its glowing eyes, the blade sinking deep into the creature's shadowy mass. The creature let out a deafening roar, its form convulsing violently as it began to collapse.
"Hold on!" Lucas shouted, bracing himself as the platform tilted dangerously.
Karis leaped clear, landing gracefully beside Lucas as the creature's body dissolved into mist. The platform steadied, and for a moment, all was still.

Aftermath
The group stood in silence, their breathing heavy, the echoes of the battle fading into the distance. The mist around them had calmed, no longer surging with malicious intent. Ethan leaned on his pipe, wincing as he pressed a hand to his bruised ribs.
"Well," he said, his voice hoarse, "that was fun. Let's never do it again."
Karis shot him a look but said nothing, her knife already back in its sheath. Naomi crouched near the edge, scanning the chasm below. "The platform's still descending," she said. "We're not done yet."
"Of course we're not," Ethan muttered. "Because why would the Forge let us off easy?"
Lucas clapped him on the back, his grin returning despite the exhaustion etched into his features. "Hey, we made it through round one. That's something."
"Yeah," Ethan said, staring into the swirling mist below. "But I've got a feeling round two's going to be a lot worse."
The platform continued its descent, carrying them deeper into the unknown.
