Chapter 25 : Familiar Yet Mysterious Spirit…

The next sixty minutes pass in a blur of activity. We salvage what we can from the ruined sanctuary; books, supplies, weapons.

Jay insists on helping despite his injury, though I catch him wincing when he thinks no one's looking.

Thalia works efficiently, her face a mask of concentration as she sorts through potential resources.

Evelyn herself seems to age before my eyes, her movements growing slower as she says goodbye to her home of many years. I find her in the central chamber, her hand resting on a damaged pillar, magic flowing from her fingertips into the wood.

"What are you doing?" I ask.

"Saying goodbye," she says simply. "And setting the final decoy-defense."

I watch as her magic seeps into the living wood, spreading through the roots and branches that form the sanctuary's skeleton. "You're going to destroy it," I realize, seeing how the spell takes hold.
