Chapter 37: Shadows in the Library
Reiji pushed open the heavy wooden doors of the Imperial Library, stepping into the vast, dimly lit hall. Towering bookshelves stretched toward the ceiling, packed with ancient tomes and scrolls. The scent of parchment and ink filled the air, mingling with the faint glow of enchanted lanterns hovering near the reading tables.
Aeris and Lyra flanked him as they moved deeper inside. Despite the grandeur, the place was eerily quiet—too quiet.
"I don't like this," Lyra muttered, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.
Reiji nodded. After the notification about being marked by multiple guilds, it was only a matter of time before someone tried to intercept them. He needed to be quick.
They approached the librarian, a frail old NPC with spectacles so thick they magnified his eyes comically. "Excuse me," Reiji said, keeping his voice polite. "I need information on ancient relics and lost artifacts."
The librarian peered at him before nodding. "Follow me."
He led them through rows of shelves, eventually stopping before a section labeled Forbidden Histories. The books here were locked behind a magical barrier, the runes glowing faintly.
"The information you seek lies within these tomes," the librarian said. "However, accessing them comes with a cost."
Reiji's brow furrowed. "What kind of cost?"
The old man smiled cryptically. "Knowledge is never free, young one. To read from this section, you must answer a question. Answer correctly, and the books shall open to you. Fail, and the library will reject you."
Aeris smirked. "A test? This should be easy."
The librarian's expression turned grave. "Then listen well."
The air around them shifted as a notification appeared.

The librarian's voice echoed through the hall.
"There exists a blade that never dulls, yet it cannot cut. A sword that has slain kings, yet it never struck a single blow. What is it?"
Silence filled the space.
Reiji's mind raced. It sounded like a riddle, but there had to be a deeper meaning. A blade that never dulls yet cannot cut… something symbolic?
Lyra frowned. "A ceremonial sword?"
Aeris crossed her arms. "That wouldn't fit. It's supposed to have slain kings."
Reiji suddenly smiled. "A word."
The librarian's eyes gleamed. "And why do you say that?"
"A word can't physically cut, but it can be sharper than any blade. Words have toppled empires, ended wars, and led kings to their deaths. A word is a weapon that never dulls."
The runes flickered, then vanished. The magical barrier dissolved.

The librarian bowed slightly. "Well reasoned. You may proceed."
Reiji let out a breath of relief. But before he could step forward, a new notification appeared.
[Warning: A shadow lurks within the library.]
He barely had time to react before the torches flickered—and the room plunged into darkness.
