Japsie's eyes widened as the school bell rang, signaling the end of another grueling day. He gathered his belongings, careful not to trip over his own feet. As a self-proclaimed nerd, Japsie was more comfortable with books than sports.
Just as he was about to head out the door, the school's siren alarm blared to life. Japsie's heart skipped a beat. What was going on?
He looked out the window to see chaos erupting outside. Jets screamed through the sky, leaving contrails behind. Police cars and ambulances sped down the streets, sirens wailing.
Japsie's phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out to see a frantic text from his mom: "Japsie, get home NOW! Don't go anywhere else! I'll explain later."
Japsie's mind racing, he grabbed his backpack and rushed out the door. Chuckie, his trusty dog, a scruffy little terrier mix, trotted alongside him.
As they made their way through the crowded hallways, Japsie's clumsiness kicked in. He stumbled, almost falling over his own feet. Chuckie yelped, as if scolding him for being so careless.
"Sorry, boy!" Japsie whispered, scratching Chuckie behind the ears.
They finally reached the school entrance, where Japsie's eyes widened in horror. The streets were filled with people running wildly, screaming, and... and something else.
Something that made Japsie's blood run cold.
Japsie's eyes scanned the chaos outside. People were running wildly, screaming, and... biting each other. Japsie's mind struggled to process what he was seeing.
"Chuckie, we need to get out of here," Japsie whispered, tugging on Chuckie's leash.
They pushed through the crowds, dodging panicked students and teachers. Japsie's clumsiness threatened to get the better of him, but Chuckie's steady presence kept him grounded.
As they turned a corner, Japsie spotted a group of infected students stumbling towards them. Their eyes were cloudy, their skin grayish, and their mouths open in a snarling snout.
Japsie's heart skipped a beat. He grabbed Chuckie's leash and took off in a sprint, weaving through the crowds and dodging the infected.
They finally reached the school gates, where Japsie's mom was waiting in their car, her face pale with worry.
"Japsie, thank God you're safe!" she exclaimed, yanking open the door.
Japsie leapt in, Chuckie close behind. As they sped away from the school, Japsie caught a glimpse of the chaos they left behind.
The infected were spreading, and fast.
As they sped away from the chaos, Japsie's mom explained that they were heading to a safe zone, a secret bunker that her friend had set up. But the journey was long, and the roads were treacherous.
After hours of driving, they finally stopped at a deserted gas station. The sign creaked in the wind, reading "Mae's Market". Japsie's mom warned him to stay close, as they filled up the gas tank.
As they entered the store, a chill ran down Japsie's spine. The shelves were dusty, the air thick with an eerie silence. Chuckie growled softly, as if sensing something was off.
Suddenly, a faint cry for help echoed from the back of the store. Japsie's mom hesitated, but Japsie didn't. He rushed towards the sound, Chuckie by his side.
They found a lady, roughly Japsie's mom's age, pinned down by a snarling infected. Japsie didn't hesitate. With a surge of adrenaline, he grabbed a nearby baseball bat and swung it with all his might.
The infected stumbled back, giving Japsie and the lady just enough time to escape. They sprinted towards the front of the store, the infected hot on their heels.
As they burst through the door, Japsie's mom was nowhere to be seen. Her car was still parked, but she was gone.
"Mom!" Japsie screamed, frantically scanning the surrounding area.
The lady grabbed Japsie's arm, her eyes wild with fear. "We have to get out of here, now!" she yelled.
Japsie hesitated, unsure what to do. But Chuckie's insistent barking snapped him back to reality. They had to keep moving.
With a heavy heart, Japsie followed the lady and Chuckie, leaving his mom behind. As they sped away from Mae's Market, Japsie couldn't shake the feeling that he'd never see his mom again.
As they sped away from Mae's Market, Japsie's eyes scanned the horizon, hoping against hope that his mom would magically appear. And then, suddenly, she did.
A massive truck came barreling down the road, horn blaring, and Japsie's mom at the wheel. She swerved the truck expertly, cutting off their escape route.
The lady slammed on the brakes, and Japsie's heart almost stopped. But his mom's face appeared in the truck's window, a fierce grin spreading across her face.
"Get in, now!" she yelled.
Japsie didn't hesitate. He yanked open the door, and Chuckie leapt in beside him. The lady followed, looking shell-shocked.
As they sped away from Mae's Market, Japsie's mom explained that she'd been ambushed by a group of infected while trying to scavenge for supplies. But she'd managed to commandeer the truck and escape.
Japsie's heart swelled with pride. His mom was a total boss.
But as they drove, the landscape grew increasingly desolate. Buildings were abandoned, cars overturned, and debris littered the streets.
The lady, who introduced herself as KC, explained that the infection was spreading rapidly. The government had established safe zones, but they were few and far between.
Japsie's mom nodded grimly. "We need to find one of those safe zones, and fast."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world in a golden glow, Japsie felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they'd make it through this apocalypse after all.
As night fell, Japsie's mom led them to the rooftop of a nearby building. She stationed herself at the stairwell, gun at the ready, while Japsie, KC, and Chuckie settled in for the night.
KC, who had been quiet until now, spoke up. "Thanks for saving me back there. I owe you one."
Japsie smiled. "No problem. I'm just glad we made it out alive."
KC extended her hand. "I'm KC, by the way. 30 years young."
Japsie took her hand, feeling a spark of electricity. "Japsie. 17. And my mom's 37," he added, unsure why.
KC raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Well, your mom's definitely aged well."
Japsie's face flushed. "Uh, yeah..."
The awkward silence that followed was broken by Chuckie's sudden bark. KC laughed. "I think someone wants attention."
As they played with Chuckie, Japsie couldn't help but steal glances at KC. She was beautiful, funny, and seemed to genuinely care about him.
But just as things were starting to feel comfortable, Japsie's mom appeared, her expression stern.
"Time for bed, Japsie. We have a long day ahead."
Japsie nodded, feeling a pang of disappointment. As he settled in for the night, KC whispered, "Goodnight, Japsie."
"Goodnight, KC," he replied, his heart racing.
